Six women vanish from Ohio – suspected to be victims of serial killing

There are fears that a serial killer is on the loose in Chillicothe, Ohio since six women have gone missing from this city – their bodies have been recovered from streams and creeks last year. One of them was shot in the head. The FBI is investigating these cases. Moreover, five of them had children and one was pregnant.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 25 June 2015.
As revealed by the Ross County Sheriff's Department – it is a small community and, in view of the number of females who have gone missing, and then the recovery of the bodies there are doubts on whether these are the work of a serial killer.
It seems most of the women had a history of drug use, and some of them had reportedly worked as prostitutes to pay for their drug habits.
The city of Chillicothe has a population below 22,000 and is located around 60 miles south of Columbus. (Image courtesy wikimediacommons.org)

Two girl suicide bombers kill at least 30 in Nigerian market

#suicidebomber #nigeria #bokoharam #mosque #ISIS Two teenage girls blew themselves up and killed at least 30 people in a twin suicide bomb attack. The venue of the attack was near a crowded mosque in a bustling market in Maiduguri. The people were from the Baga Road fish market and were praying during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Maiduguri is the largest city of northeast Nigeria and is considered to be the birthplace of Boko Haram, the Islamic extremist group.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 23 June 2015.
It is feared that the two girl suicide bombers had been captives of the Boko Haram terror group who forced them to blow themselves up. This was the fourth suicide bombing in Maiduguri over the past three weeks.
As explained by a military bomb disposal expert, most of the bombs carried by girls and women are installed with remote detonation devices which means the carrier cannot control the explosion.
It may be recalled that Boko Haram has sworn allegiance to ISIS in March and has kidnapped thousands of girls and women over the past few years. The increase in the number of females carrying out suicide bomb attacks on behalf of the militants would make one wonder whether these innocent captives are being forced to become suicide bombers and blow themselves up.

Alert mother foils plan to blow up Buckingham Palace

Two teenagers had planned to make bombs and blow up Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, "a random shopping centre" and a public school. But, thanks to the alert mother of one of these boys, the plan was detected in time and foiled.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 22 June 2015.
The 16-year-olds had gone online to buy the material necessary to make the items and, one of the boy's mothers called the police after she found the substances that had been delivered to her home and became suspicious. Photos of fuses, pipes and some of the chemicals they had ordered were released by the CPS following the case.
The two of them have been locked up for a year after they admitted taking delivery of chemicals they bought online. It has been confirmed by specialists that the material discovered could have been used to manufacture viable explosive devices, similar to hand grenades.
One of the boys was described as a loner by his parents, and schoolmates knew he used drugs. The other boy was said to be prone to erratic behavior and suicidal thoughts. They had even planned escape routes and, potential suicide.
The boys have admitted to a conspiracy to make an explosive substance for unlawful purposes and have been sentenced to a 12-month detention and training order.

ISIS lays mines at ancient historical site of Palmyra

#ISIS #Palmyra #SOHR #UNESCOHeritage The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has indicated that the ISIS militants is on a destruction spree and has laid explosives and land mines at the ruins of Palmyra in Syria. This has raised apprehensions that they would destroy the ancient heritage site and thousands of years of history would be lost forever.
This has been reported in foxnews.com dated 22 June 2015.
Palmyra had been overrun by ISIS fighters last month and there are genuine fears that they would try to destroy the city as they have already done with other heritage sites and smashed ancient artifacts in the museums of Iraq and Syria.
Palmyra is a UNESCO World Heritage site and thousands of visitors flock there to see for themselves the intricate works of art and architecture. That was before the start of Syria's bloody civil war.
Palmyra is renowned for its well-preserved statues, tombs, and columns, and was an active archeological site before the war. It is believed that the ISIS takes away many priceless items to finance their vicious activities of destruction and murders.

61-year-old woman kicked and stamped her husband to death over a pack of cigarettes

It was an argument over a pack of cigarettes that led the 61-yer-old woman to kick and stamp to death her 64-year-old husband. The diminutive 5ft woman unleashed the brutal attack at their home on the Isle of Skye in February last year.
She has now been convicted of murder and jailed for a minimum of 15 years.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 19 June 2015.
The woman complained that her husband, a former paramedic, had hidden a packet of cigarettes on the night he was killed. Both of them had earlier tried to give up smoking.
The terrible murder took place at their home on the Breakish area of Skye, where they had moved to in the 1990s after her husband had left his former wife. The woman, during the trial, told the Court that she could not remember the assault.
The murdered man was a foot taller than his wife and, suffered multiple facial injuries, 20 rib fractures and extensive bruising as a result of the assault.

Bear bile farm in Vietnam finally closed down, only one bear survived out of 27

Vietnam is known for its bear bile farms in which ‘moon bears’ are kept captive and crude catheters are jabbed into their abdomen to drain out fluid twice a day. This fluid, then, is used in Chinese medicine as aphrodisiac and hangover cure. The 'moon bears' are named after the yellow moon-shaped crescents on their chests.
The media had reported last November about the Cau Trang bile farm in Halong Bay, Vietnam where 27 of the endangered animals has been kept captive in cramped metal cages. It has finally been closed down and, only of the bears has been rescued alive. It was found in a half-starved condition and gasping for life on the floor of his tiny cage at the farm.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 19 June 2015.
It is believed that the owner milked the bears for their valuable bile and sold them at huge profits to Asian tourists and must have either starved the bears to death or slaughtered them to sell off their paws and gall bladders.
Incidentally, the paws, meat and gall bladders of the ‘moon bears’ are sold for the equivalent of £625 a bear and usually smuggled to China for use in traditional medicine.

From initial reports, the suspect is of small or slender build, wearing a gray sweatshirt with blue jeans and Timberland boots. He was clean shaven.

North Korea supremo Kim Jong-Un defies ban of the UN – fires anti-ship missile

North Korea supremo Kim Jong-Un has defied the ban imposed on it by the UN and has test fired its newly deployed anti-ship rockets which are believed to have a range of 120-Km. This has happened only a few weeks after it had claimed to have tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile in the month of May.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 15 June 2015.
Kim Jong-un witnessed the test-firing of three KN-01 short-range missiles from a site near the city of Wonsan, as indicated by South Korea's defense ministry. The 'highly intelligent' rockets were reportedly fired around 4.30pm and the process lasted 26 minutes.
This news is a reason for alarm because North Korea has been banned by the United Nations Security Council from testing or developing ballistic missiles.
Korean Central News Agency has revealed that the missiles had accurately detected and hit their targets but it was silent on the location where it took place. Neither has it provided any other details or specifications of the rockets.
A fully developed submarine missile capability would take North Korea’s nuclear threat to a new level, but in the opinion of experts, the authenticity of the May test is in doubt since the photos might have been digitally altered.

US to position military equipment in East Europe to deter Russian invasion

The situation in Eastern Europe is volatile and the US has plans to position military equipment like battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and other heavy weapons to cater to approximately 5,000 troops in a number of Baltic and Eastern European countries. The intention is to counter any designs of a Russian aggression in Europe.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 14 June 2015.
The United States wants to reassure its European allies in the wake of Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea in March 2014. The proposal is likely to be approved by U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter and the White House. A meeting of NATO defense ministers would be held in Brussels this month and the approval could be accorded before that.
Once approved, the proposal would mark the first time since the Cold War that Washington would be positioning heavy military equipment in the newer NATO member states in Eastern Europe. These states used to, once, be under Soviet influence.
Under the proposal, 'a company's worth of equipment - enough for about 150 soldiers - would be kept in each of the three Baltic nations: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Moreover, equipment for a company or possibly a battalion - about 750 soldiers - would be located in countries like Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and possibly Hungary.

Leaked ammonia gas from tanker kills 5, another 100 taken ill

A gas tanker transporting ammonia gas got stuck under a bridge and its valve was damaged resulting in leakage of the gas into the surrounding areas - it resulted in the death of five men and another 100 were taken ill and have been shifted to local hospitals. They complained of difficulty in breathing.
This has been reported in telegraphindia.com dated 13 June 2015.
The incident took place when the tanker got stuck under a flyover along a canal on the Doraha Bypass Road, about 25km from Ludhiana on the Delhi-Ludhiana highway.
Residents had to be evacuated from the neighboring areas. Since the incident happened late at night, the people affected were less. In the opinion of the police, it was the negligence of the driver who should have first checked to ensure whether the vehicle would be able to pass below the bridge.

MI5 warns – extremists on the prowl in the streets of Britain

MI5 has made no bones about the fact that jihadists trained in extremist activities in Iraq and Syria have returned to Britain and the country is facing an 'unprecedented' threat from these Islamists who have been trained in terrorism overseas.
These jihadists include half of the nearly 700 Britons who have travelled to Iraq and Syria – they have returned back in the UK and could be plotting attacks.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 12 June 2015.
An inquiry has revealed that the number of extremists who had visited a training camp or fought alongside jihadists was higher than at any point before or after 9/11 and, there are also a large number of fanatics in the UK who were trained in other countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, East Africa and Yemen.
In the opinion of officers of Scotland Yard, troubled teenagers are being groomed online by the flood of Islamic State propaganda and street gang members who used to earlier be involved in crimes like knifing and muggings are forming Islamist cells. They are even trying to co-ordinate international plots.

British would-be jihadists are making detour to Syria via Canada to avoid detection

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has made a startling revelation that would0be British jihadists who want to join ISIS fighting in Syria are taking a detour via Canada in order to avoid detection.
He has said that these tactics are used by radicalized extremists to escape being caught by police and their actions were becoming 'increasingly sophisticated'. As a result, it becomes difficult for the security services to keep tabs on those who are determined to travel to the region.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 10 June 2015.
On a rough estimate, nearly 700 British citizens are believed to have travelled to Syria and Iraq and there are growing fears that they would return to the UK to plot terror attacks here. Incidentally, airlines operating in the UK have been asked to check all teenagers who are boarding flights to Turkey.
This action was taken following the case of three south London schoolgirls who had flown out of Britain to join ISIS. Philip Hammond had attended a summit in Paris with 20 countries to discuss how to tackle the rise of ISIS where Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had claimed that the dramatic advance of ISIS is a combined failure of the world community. He went on to add that there is 'a lot of talk' about supporting his country but 'very little on the ground'.

Dornier aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard missing with three crew members

A Dornier aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard has gone missing with three crew members onboard. The aircraft CG-791 had been inducted into service last year and it had taken off from Chennai at 5.30pm. It was in touch with the airport in Tiruchirappalli shortly before it went missing at 9.20pm. The incident took place around 16 nautical miles off the coast of Chidambaram, somewhere between Cuddalore and Karaikal. It was being flown by a “highly experienced crew”.
This has been informed by a top coast guard official and reported in telegraphindia.com dated 9 June 2015.
The Dornier cannot fly above 10,000 feet and are mainly used for low altitude maritime surveillance.
A massive search operation has been launched with nine ships backed by a long-range maritime surveillance aircraft. It has, so far, not succeeded in finding the Coast Guard Dornier. The aircraft had been deployed along the Tamil Nadu coast and Palk Bay from the Chennai Coast Guard Air Station and it did not return to the base.

ISIS militants ambush and kill Taliban fighters in Afghanistan

#ISIS #PakistanTaliban #AfghanistanTaliban It was a fight between two Islamist groups when extremists fighting for the Islamic State's fledgling outpost in Afghanistan brutally beheaded at least 10 Taliban members when they were fleeing a gun battle with government troops.
The attack happened in a remote area in the eastern province of Nangarhar and has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 8 June 2015.
The rival terror groups had declared war on one another in April after the Afghan Taliban branded the self-declared caliphate of ISIS illegitimate and refused to declare allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Since then, the rivalry between the two Islamic terror groups have intensified with the ISIS responding by launching recruitment drives deep into Taliban territory. Tis allowed them to expand rapidly – they have even replaced the Taliban as the dominant controlling force in one of the districts.
The influence of the ISIS is growing and Boko Haram in Nigeria and extremists in Libya have already entered the ISIS fold. As a result, other terror groups like the Al Shabaab in East Africa, Al Qaeda in the Middle East and the Taliban in central Asia are now faced with a dilemma ad have to take a decision on whether to join up with ISIS or risk becoming the group's enemies.

US admits - there is no way to monitor online encrypted messages of ISIS

The multiplying effect of the online propaganda blitz of ISIS has put the US on the back foot and they have been forced to admit that there is no way to monitor the online encrypted communications of the terrorists.
This has been reported in foxnews.com dated 3 June 2015.
The ISIS was distributing its propaganda and recruiting messages to as many as 200,000 people on social media worldwide, and, with 200-plus social media companies, the problem aggravates.
Michael Steinbach, head of the FBI's counterterrorism division, has revealed that some of these companies build their business model around end-to-end encryption which adds to the problem. While the number of ISIS propagandists were a few thousand, technology was complicating efforts to monitor them.
In his opinion, evolving technologies were outpacing laws that allow law enforcement to intercept communications by suspects. It is a sensitive issue and has go be approached cautiously because with the advanced communication systems available, secrets can no longer be kept secrets for a longtime.

Watery grave for 400 passengers of capsized cruise boat in Yangtze River

Eastern Star, a cruise boat with 456 people on board aged from between three to over 80, overturned, capsized and sank in the Yangtze and 400 of the passengers are missing, presumed dead. It seems the freak accident occurred due to a tornado in the region.
This has been reported in zeenews.com dated 3 June 2015.
The cruise boat is owned by the Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corporation had the capacity to carry more than 500 people and was heading to the southwestern city of Chongqing from Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province.
It capsized and sank in the Jianli section of the Yangtze. The company runs tours along the Three Gorges section of the Yangtze and the passengers had booked their trips through a Shanghai-based travel agency.
The captain and the chief engineer, who were among the few to be rescued, have been detained by police for questioning. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the ship was not overloaded and had enough life vests for its passengers.
Since many of the dead were elderly Chinese tourists, Premier Li Keqiang wants a transparent investigation. (Image courtesy wikimediacommons.org)

US Police have killed two persons daily in first 5-months of the year

The United States has seen two deaths daily by the police during the first five months of the current year – the total number of people who have fallen to police bullets is at least 385. The shocking part is that the rate of fatal killings maintained by the federal government over the past decade is officially is incomplete.
This has been reported in nzherald.co.nz dated 1 June 2015.
Jim Bueermann, a former police chief and president of the Washington-based Police Foundation, a non-profit body dedicated to improving law enforcement has cautioned that reduction in the number of police shootings will not reduce unless there is a method to accurately track this information.
Interestingly, while half the victims were white, the other half was the minority. However, among the unarmed victims, two-thirds were black or Hispanic. At a rough estimate, blacks were killed at three times the rate of whites or other minorities.
Other facts - more than 80 per cent of victims were armed with potentially lethal objects, primarily guns, but also knives, machetes, revving vehicles and, in one case, a nail gun. Against this, forty-nine people had no weapon, and the guns wielded by 13 others turned out to be toys.
As to the age of victims – they were aged from 16 to 83 and eight were younger than 18.
