Paris and Brussels cancel New Year Eve fireworks due to terror threats

#terrorthreats #London #ScotlandYard #Parisattacks Brussels has cancelled its official fireworks display after two men were arrested by police and accused of plotting to attack the event. Paris has also called off its traditional display in the Champs-Elysees because it continues to remain on high alert following last month's terror attacks. In London, security barriers have been put in place to mark the new year and extra armed officers have been called in to police the New Year's Eve celebrations amid a Europe-wide warning that terrorists could be plotting an attack.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 31 December 2015.
In London, tickets have been sold out for the London Mayor’s official fireworks display on the South Bank and, those who do not have tickets have been advised to see the new year in at home or at bars across the capital. The Metropolitan Police have indicated that enhanced patrolling is a precautionary measure and not a result of any specific intelligence.
Incidentally, some officers have had leave cancelled to bolster numbers. As per Scotland Yard, there would be nearly 3,000 officers on duty in central London. The plan includes deputing additional police officers in central London and many of them would be firearms officers.
Paris has also increased the numbers - there will be 11,000 officers patrolling the city as compared with 9,000 last year.

ISIS militants planning suicide attacks in Brussels arrested in Belgium

Police in Belgium have arrested two suspected ISIS militants on suspicion of planning attacks in Brussels on New Year's Eve. The duo was held during house searches in the Brussels area, the Liege region and Flemish Brabant. It seems military-style training uniforms, ISIS propaganda and computer material were also seized and are being examined.
this has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 29 December 2015.
As per the preliminary investigation, it has been revealed that there was threat of serious attacks that would target several emblematic places in Brussels and would be carried out during the end-of-year holidays. A total of six people were taken in for questioning, but four were subsequently released while two were placed under arrest. Charges against them are - participation in the activities of a terrorist group as a leader or recruiter with the aim of committing terrorist offenses as principal or secondary actor.
Infirmation from the office of the prosecutor has indicated that no additional details would be made public, but that the probe was not connected to the November 13 attacks in Paris.
The action comes after Austrian police said a 'friendly' intelligence service had warned European capitals of the possibility of a shooting or bomb attack before New Year. This prompted police across the continent to increase security measures. Some of these are surveillance in crowded spaces 'especially at events and traffic hubs' apart from intensive identity checks and higher alertness for objects which could carry explosives such as bags or 'bicycle frames'.

Iraq claims liberation of Ramadi from ISIS is a major gain

#ISIS #ramadi #Iraqiforces #Tikrit The Iraq army has claimed that it has captured the key city of Ramadi and see this as a major victory against Islamic State but, a US defense official has said it has, so far, not been able to to confirm the Iraqis' claims. If confirmed, then the capture of Ramadi, capital of mainly Sunni-Muslim Anbar province in the Euphrates River valley west of the capital, would be a big blow to ISIS since it will deprive IS militants of their biggest prize of 2015.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 28 December 2015.
The Iraqi army had encircled the city for weeks and made the final thrust to seize the central administration complex on Sunday. Iraq's counter-terrorism forces have raised the Iraqi flag above the complex on Monday and the joint operations spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Rasool has said, in a statement broadcast on state television, that Ramadi has been liberated.
It may be recalled that the Iraqi army had already retaken the city of Tikrit from the jihadists in the spring. The final stronghold for IS in Iraq is Mosul in the north which could be the next target of the government. The number of people killed in this battle have not been disclosed but, the government has said that most civilians had been evacuated before it launched its assault.

Christmas Day bushfire destroys 100 homes in popular tourist spot of Lorne in Victoria

A Christmas Day bushfire has destroyed more than 100 homes in the popular tourist spot of Lorne in Australia's Victoria state. A total of 98 homes had been razed in Wye River and 18 at Separation Creek but, there is no report of any injuries. Firefighters have been battling the blaze along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria's south-west, popular with holidaymakers.
The fire had started with a lightning strike on 19 December and, fanned by strong winds and intense heat in recent days, has already burned across 2,200 hectares (5,437 acres).
This has been reported in bbc.com dated 26 December 2015.
Due to cooler weather and rains, the threat has reduced considerably but some emergency warnings continue to remain in place as some 1,600 residents and tourists from the popular tourist spot of Lorne have been moved out because of fears that a wind change would push the fire towards the town. However, later, they were allowed to return. Many of those who were forced to leave their homes had to spend Christmas night in alternate, hastily-arranged shelters.
It seems more than 500 firefighters, 60 tankers and 18 aircraft have been pressed into service to battle the blaze and fight the flames. Victoria Emergency Management Commissioner has indicated that although the immediate threat had receded, the fire had the "potential to burn" for weeks to come.
As a result of the fires, the Falls Music and Arts Festival, held annually near Lorne, may not go ahead.

Upto 100 killed in gas plant explosion in Nnewi, Nigeria on Christmas Eve

It was a tragedy that struck Nigeria on Christmas Eve killing up to 100 people when a ‘huge inferno’ raged at an industrial gas plant in southeastern Nigeria after an explosion that destroyed the plant and nearby houses. Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer and derives the bulk of its money through the commodity and accidents are a frequent occurrence where pipelines are often damaged by people to steal crude oil.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 25December 2015.
The fireball destroyed nearby buildings and left burned corpses littering the plant in Nnewi.
The blaze killed people who had been waiting in line to collect crude oil from the Inter Corp Oil Limited gas plant – this plant is a subsidiary of Nigerian conglomerate Chicason Group.
It seems the fire broke out when a tanker truck had finished emptying fresh gas at the plant and left without waiting to observe the prescribed cooling time. It exploded like a bomb, and the whole gas station went up in thick, black smoke along with an explosion from cooking gas cylinders.
The victims were those who had been in the station waiting in queue to get their cylinders refilled.
Nigeria loses an estimated 300,000 barrels a day to gangs that syphon crude from pipelines in the oil-rich southern states.

Storm Eva devastates Ireland, flood warnings for Christmas

#stormdesmond #stormeva #cumbria Storm Eva has wreaked destruction on Ireland and entered Britain with flood warnings issued in the North and Scotland for late Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Armed Forces have been put on standby for a Christmas flooding crisis as the North braces for more severe weather and 700 Environment Agency staff and military personnel also being deployed to take care of eventualities.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 24 December 2015.
Nearly 2,000 customers have been left without power in Ireland as the storm crossed the country, with the worst affected areas including County Cork and County Wicklow. Eva has passed over the north of the UK, but the Army is getting ready to bolster flood defenses in Cumbria ahead of further rainfall by putting out sandbags.
as per predictions of the Met Office, 150mm of rain is expected to fall over higher ground in Cumbria with 60-80mm at lower levels and with accompanying 70mph winds.
Speaking after an emergency Cobra meeting, the Environment Secretary has indicated that and, it is possible that there will be further storms, probably on Boxing Day. The weather forecast is that the rain could be persistent and heavy, with the danger of more floods in the region, which is still trying to come out of effects of Storm Desmond earlier this month.

British Muslim family not allowed to travel to Disneyland from Gatwick airport

It is a strange story of a British Muslim family of eleven members who were on their way to Disneyland. They were prevented from flying to Los Angeles by US officials and, they refused to explain their actions. The individual hails from north-east London and was looking forward to the holiday in California - he was going with his brother and nine of their children. But - they were stopped at Gatwick Airport before they boarded the flight and prevented from leaving.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 23 December 2015.
It seems he had necessary permission that he had obtained online from US authorities, hence this actions is difficult to understand. He is the latest British Muslim to have reported being suddenly barred from getting on a transatlantic flight in spite of being in possession of authorization by US authorities online.
Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to examine the case once it was raised by Stella Creasy, the MP concerned.
The incident is of 17 December and the family has still not been any reason why they were not allowed to board the plane - they had plans to visit cousins and go to Universal Studios and Magic Kingdom. To add to their miseries, the family has not been refunded the £9,000 cost of their flights and they had to also return items they had purchased at duty-free stores.

Iraqi forces trying to take over the city of Ramadi, a stronghold of the ISIS

#ISIS #ramadi #Baghdad #suicidebomber The city of Ramadi, located 90-Km from Baghdad, had fallen to ISIS in May in an embarrassing defeat for the Iraqi army and the Iraqi government forces are now trying to retake it. The forces are advancing into the center of the city which is under control of the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).
This has been reported in bbc.com 22 December 2015.
As per information, troops and allied tribesmen, backed by air strikes, had already retaken two districts, and entered two others and are believed to be heading towards the main government complex. They had to face snipers and suicide bombers.
The strategy worked. Last month, government forces completed their encirclement of the predominantly Sunni Arab city and cut off the militants inside the center from their strongholds elsewhere in Anbar province and in neighboring Syria. Moreover, engineers had built temporary bridges over the River Euphrates, which flows along the north and west of the city center and that helped the troops to enter directly into the al-Haouz district, south-west of the government complex.
The counter-terrorism forces did not face any strong resistance except snipers and suicide bombers and that was expected.

More than one million refugees have entered Europe during 2015

A staggering one million refugees mostly from Syria and Middle East countries have entered Europe during 2015 as indicated by the International Organization for Migration. This figure passed a symbolic milestone amid the fallout of war, poverty and persecution in Africa and the Middle East.
This has been reported in foxnews.com dated 22 December 2015.
The Geneva-based 162-country intergovernmental organization has said that the million mark has already crossed and it marks more than a four-fold increase from last year.
As per figures made available, IOM has indicated that ore than 820,000 crossed into Greece from Turkey, including more than 455,000 from Syria and over 186,000 from Afghanistan. Nearly 3,700 others died trying to cross the Mediterranean.
The response of Germany and Sweden have been most welcoming and accommodating, while some less-wealthy eastern European countries have erected border fences in order to stem the flow of refugees. Germany has seen around 1 million migrants arrive this year - that figure includes refugees who have arrived from Balkan countries earlier in 2015.

ISIS chooses jungles of Philippines as its training camp

#ISIS #jihadists #philippines ISIS has entered the Philippines. This country has become the latest ISIS target for expansion and it has released its first propaganda video of a terror training camp in the Filipino jungle. In the video, a number of jihadi commanders are shown urging Filipinos to travel to Syria to join ISIS before revealing that the group has already set up its own terror camp in the Philippines.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 21 December 2015.
The video shows the men working on their fitness and agility by completing a series of assault course drills. The small group of recruits all wear similar black clothing and masks and can be seen climbing up rope ladders, crawling under barbed wire and practicing with weapons.
The Filipino government has admitted that support for ISIS in the Philippines was limited to local bandits who claim allegiance to the group. But, the latest video would tend to suggest that ISIS has zeroed on to the Philippines as a potential site for expanding its bases.
The video has surfaced after eight members of a criminal gang, that had pledged allegiance to ISIS, were killed in a firefight with the military in the southern Philippines last month. The hour-long battle happened in Palimbang, a remote town in the south. This locality is home to the predominantly Catholic nation's Muslim minority and the scene of decades of conflict.

Prisoners of Bullingdon jail lose their skunk cannabis because the drone crashed

It was pure bad luck for prisoners of Bullingdon jail in Bicester, Oxfordshire, when they lost their dose of cannabis because the drone that was carrying them crashed in the jail's exercise yard. The cannabis was super-strength skunk cannabis. The drone was also carrying mobile phones and chargers and had been sent in by someone who was controlling it from outside.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 19 December 2015.
The prisoners had apparently ordered the illicit goods in time for Christmas and the drone was in a part of the jail where there was no CCTV. It was a well-planned operation.
Drones have now become a major security issue because thir frequency of operation has increased and this was not the first time that a drone has been used to smuggle illicit items into a prison. Last month prison staff found a drone, which had crashed into Strangeways prison yard, carrying a parcel stuffed with illicit items.
The Ministry of Justice is trying to introduce legislation to make it illegal to land a drone in prison or to use a drone to drop in psychoactive substances such as 'legal highs'. Anyone who makes use of drones in an attempt to get contraband into prisons can be punished with a sentence of up to two years.
The Department for Transport has also warned that parents who buy their children a drone for Christmas may have to register it with the authorities in the future and ministers are preparing a major crackdown on the use of drones amid growing fears about safety and privacy.
It may be recalled that four drones had been involved in near misses with commercial aircraft at British airports during a single month this summer.

1,000 British troops and Special forces going to Libya to eliminate ISIS jihadists

Britain is getting ready to deploy up to 1,000 troops and Special Forces to Libya in a bid to help wipe out Islamic State jihadists. Therefore, military officials are examining plans to send soldiers to the country to help train Libyan security forces to fight militants taking over the region. They will follow a team of soldiers who will be deployed to Libya to carry out a 'scoping' mission.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 17 December 2015.
These British troops would be deployed in a non-combat role, elite SAS members would be armed to take out high-value ISIS targets. The tentative plan envisages that British military personnel would contribute to a 6,000-strong Italian-led mission to train and support local forces.
Of course, this deployment would mean boots on the ground in an area where six SAS men were captured during an operation in 2011, months before the death of Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi.
Britain and Italy have joined up with the European Union and the United Nations on a plan to support the new government by rebuilding the state and training security forces. The Special Forces could also be sent to Libya to spearhead military operations that would target human traffickers who are exploiting migrants who want to make the perilous crossing to Europe.
The SAS would interact with specialist forces from other EU countries and help to zero-in and pinpoint the leaders of ruthless gangs, as also the vessels they are using and the routes they take.

United States faced with Syrian refugee influx - nearly 100,000 have entered since 2012

#syrianrefugees #terrorists #CounterTerrorism While a proposal to admit 10,000 Syrian refugees to the United States has ignited a bitter debate in Washington, the reality is that there are more than 10 times that number of people from Syria who have quietly come to America since 2012.
This has been reported in foxnews.com dated 16 December 2015.
Some 102,313 Syrians were granted admission to the U.S. as legal permanent residents or through programs including work, study and tourist visas from 2012 through August of this year - this period roughly coincides with the devastating civil war that still engulfs the Middle Eastern country.
In the opinion of experts, any fears that terrorists might infiltrate the proposed wave of refugees from United Nations-run camps would be less when compared with the potential danger that is already there.
These Syrians have arrived on all kinds of visas and with green cards, and possibly U.S. citizenship. That makes it impossible for our counter-terrorism authorities to keep track of them all. Equally difficult would it be to prevent them from carrying out attacks or belatedly try to deport them.
The numbers have been obtained from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection - it shows 60,010 Syrian visa holders have entered the U.S. since 2012, including 16,245 this year through August. Additional numbers have been provided by a Congressional source and it revealed that another 42,303 Syrians were granted citizenship or green cards during the same period.
Most of these Syrians have secured legal entry before they arrive.

World War III likely to be a cyber war feels John McAfee

#ISIS #Cyberwar In the opinion of John McAfee, a leading computer security expert, a WWIII could be in the making and when it does happen, it will be a cyber war that the 'woefully underprepared' U.S. may lose to ISIS. He has described the reliance of the United States on war machines and troops which is outdated because jihadi hackers could turn such equipment against America in a nightmarish 'doomsday' scenario.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 16 December 2015.
John McAfee has revealed In his column for the International Business Times that ISIS was actively recruiting hackers, while China and North Korea have already established programs devoted to 'weaponised computing'. Obviously, conventional weapons and the arsenal of bullets, bombs, tanks, planes, boats, missiles and nuclear capabilities are rivaled by few, and likely exceeded by none. These are irrelevant when it comes down to cyber war and these weapons and equipment could be turned against us by using computers.
If the U.S. was unable to protect its cyber networks and the infrastructure connected to them like power grids, nuclear power stations, planes, cars and the finance industry, it would remain susceptible to hackers.
As to John McAfee, in 2012 he lived in Belize, where he claimed to have exposed high-level corruption before fleeing while being sought by police for questioning about a suspected murder. He was later deported to the U.S. from Guatamala, where he is now running a campaign for the 2016 Presidency.

34 Muslim nations join forces with Saudi Arabia to tackle the ISIS

#ISIS #Riyadh #saudiledcoalition The battle cry is eliminate the ISIS and, in order to go about this task, Saudi Arabia has formed an alliance of 34 Muslim nations to fight the menace of ISIS and tackle 'the Islamic world's problem with terrorism'. This Saudi-led coalition will be based in Riyadh and includes powerful gulf states Egypt and Turkey but excludes Iran. This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 15 December 2015.
The alliance members from the Middle East, Africa and Asia will work from the capital 'to coordinate and support military operations to fight terrorism'.
As Saudi defense minister and crown prince Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud has indicated - the aim was to tackle 'the Islamic world's problem with terrorism and will be a partner in the worldwide fight against this scourge.... Arrangements would be made for 'coordination with friendly peace-loving nations and international bodies for the sake of supporting international efforts to combat terrorism and to save international peace and security'.
More than 10 other 'Islamic countries' had expressed support for the coalition, including Indonesia.
The alliance is being established because terrorism 'should be fought by all means and collaboration should be made to eliminate it.'

Sniper kills five ISIS jhadists with only three bullets in Iraq

#ISIS #jihadists #Mosul #iraq An SAS sniper in Iraq killed five ISIS jihadists with only three bullets and succeeded in preventing a group of jihadists launching a suicide bomb attack in a dramatic shoot-out in an ISIS-held part of Iraq. The operation happened two weeks ago about 10-Km outside the ISIS stronghold of Mosul and is termed as a 'classic SAS mission'.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 14 December 2015.
The marksman, who had joined the SAS a decade ago had saved the lives of hundreds of innocent people - he fired three well-aimed shots at the jihadists as they left a bomb factory near Mosul. He got the go-ahead after the men were seen leaving the bomb factory wearing heavy coats in hot weather – it was a sign that they were trying to hide their suicide vests.
They were believed to be on their way to carry out a terror attack at a nearby town and had plans to detonate their suicide vests amongst hundreds of civilians that would lead to mass deaths.
The SAS veteran managed to eliminate all three of the extremists, as well as two 'guards' who were supposedly in place to keep a look-out and protect them from military forces. The sniper shot the first jihadi in the chest as he walked out of the factory - that resulted in his suicide vest to detonate. He was killed instantly and took with him the two ISIS 'guards' who were in a nearby car.
The second ISIS militant was shot in the head and the third was killed when the sniper's bullet struck his suicide vest and caused it to detonate.

Two men of Syrian origin caught in Geneva with explosives

With terrorists surfacing in the most unexpected of places, it is becoming a major problem for security agencies to tackle this new and growing menace. Two people of Syrian origin had been arrested in Geneva - it is suspected that the duo was transporting 'explosives and toxic gases'. This was revealed as a part of a probe into a terror threat.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 12 December 2015.
Both of them are accused of the 'manufacture, concealment and transport of explosives and toxic gases' as informed by the office of the federal prosecutor's office.
Moreover, they are also under suspicion of violating Swiss law prohibiting 'groups like Al-Qaeda, Islamic State and similar organizations'. The arrest happened in the Geneva region and the police have confirmed about finding traces of explosives inside the car.
The western city has remained on high alert as a result of increased jihadist threat in Switzerland. The Geneva region has raised its alert level to three on a five-point scale following fears of a potential terror attack. Armed police were deployed at sensitive locations across the city, which is home to the UN's European headquarters.
Incidentally, Geneva is almost entirely enclosed by France, a country still reeling from the jihadist attacks that left 130 people dead in Paris last month.

Scotland Yard launches biggest ever crackdown on guns in London

In view of the increase in incidents of stabbings and firearms offenses, the Met Police have launched joint operations of crackdown on guns involving hundreds of specialist officers, including firearms teams. Ever since January, 15 teenagers have been stabbed to death in London. Hence this operation of Scotland Yard - it is one of its biggest ever operations against gun and knife crime in the capital.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 11 December 2015.
Apart from the stabbings of teenagers, there have also been more than 350 firearms-related incidents in London so far this year - this is up 15% on the 2014 figure.
The crackdown follows a guns amnesty that had been announced two weeks after the Paris terror attacks. As a result of the amnesty, dozens of guns were recovered, including an AK47 assault rifle, the same kind of weapon used in the attack on the French capital.
The operation, codenamed Kestrel, is being run by the Trident and Area Crime Command.
The police have seized eight firearms, including two handguns and three sawn-off shotguns, four knives, two swords, 11 kilos of cocaine, three kilos of cannabis, one kilo of MDMA, four kilos of crack cocaine and heroin with a street value of £250,000.
Operation Kestrel is an extension of an earlier initiative that had been launched against knife crime in June in which 6000 arrests were made and 1,000 knives were seized.

Swiss police hunting for four terrorists linked to the Paris attack

The Swiss police are searching for four terror suspects and the national security alert level has been raised as guards, armed with with MP5 sub-machine guns, have been stationed at the entry points to the United Nations complex in Geneva.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 10 December 2015.
The Swiss federal police do not have any information linking suspects to the deadly attacks in Paris last month in which 130 people were killed. But, Swiss federal authorities have tipped-off the officers. The department of security has indicated that the Geneva police, on the basis of this information, have increased their level of vigilance and reinforced the number of police agents on the ground.
Geneva is located more than 250 miles southeast of Paris and the police in Belgium and elsewhere have been on the lookout of one suspect who had rented a car which was used to carry the gunmen to the Bataclan theater in Paris. The Brussels-based suspect, who is believed to be the brother of one of the suicide bombers, is thought to have fled Paris on the night of the massacres. The third gunman who was involved in the attack on the music hall has also been identified as a 23-year-old man from Strasbourg.

USS Zumwalt, largest destroyer ever built, sets out for sea trials

#USSZumwalt #destroyer #USNavy USS Zumawalt is the largest destroyer ever built for the US Navy and it has set out for the ocean for the first time where it will undergo sea trials. It has been built by shipbuilder Bath Iron Works and over 200 shipbuilders, sailors and residents gathered along the Kennebec River in Maine to watch the 600ft destroyer glide past Fort Popham.
Bath Iron Works will be testing the $4.4-billion vessel's performance and making adjustments over the winter, before it finally enters service in the US Navy next year.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 8 December 2015.
USS Zumwalt features electric propulsion, new radar and sonar, powerful missiles and guns and a stealth design which will help it to reduce its radar signature and, hence, chances of detection. Moreover, it will be able to operate with a much smaller crew than current destroyers.
It is the first of three ships in its class and the 15,000-ton USS Zumwalt has been faced with construction delays due to high tech equipment on board. Operational concerns, growing costs and fleet makeup changes have forced the Navy to cut its program of 32 of the ships to just three.

President Obama cautions Americans on new type of terror threat

#BarackObama #WhiteHouse #terrorthreats Speaking from his Oval office, US President Barack Obama has cautioned his countrymen about the "new phase" of terror threats, namely mass killings. He made the observations shortly after the deadly shootings in San Bernardino where a husband-wife team killed 14 and left 21 injured.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 7 December 2015.
The President also confirmed that the FBI was still gathering information about the attacks and added that there was no evidence to indicate that the killers had been directed by terror groups overseas. He also explained how the threat that terrorism posed to the US had changed from the "multi-faceted" attacks of 9/11, to simpler methods such as mass shootings.
President Obama wants Congress to stop terror suspects (or those who are on no-fly lists), from buying guns altogether because, no matter how effective intelligence agencies are, it is not possible to identify all would-be shooters before they commit a crime.
He also responded to those who are against further gun controls in the US. As he said - what argument can possibly be there to allow a terrorist suspect to buy a semi-automatic weapon? It is a matter of national security.
It seems the White House has plans to meet major Silicon Valley companies and work out methods of restricting the use of social media for promoting or planning violence. In the opinion of President Obama, the tech sector needs to collaborate more closely with law enforcement agencies when online messages "crosses the line" from expressing an opinion "into active terrorist plotting".
