The incident happened in the conservative Aceh Province, on the north-western tip of Sumatra, and the state prosecutor read out the order of punishment – then a masked man wearing brown robes stepped forward and using a thin bamboo-like rattan cane, he whipped the culprits over their backs five times each.
The punishment was meted out after the Friday morning prayers and people were everywhere - .some of the men filmed and took photos of the incident on smartphones as the victims tensed up and grimaced in pain.
Illiza Saaduddin Djamal, the mayor of Banda Aceh, has revealed that this was the seventh public caning of people who broke Sharia law since it was enforced in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, 12 years ago.
