The fight started after partying that began on Sunday in the El Abra prison, which is just outside the city of Cochabamba.
The injured included two women, one of them was pregnant – but, the foetus did not survive because a bullet had gone through her womb.
All the four dead were Bolivians and, one of them was a prison gang boss named Ariel Tancara, whose throat was reportedly slit. It seems rivalry between Bolivian and foreign prison gangs was to blame.
As per reports of Bolivian media, the dead were Colombians who had been jailed for drug trafficking. The Sunday night party had alcohol and live music and family members of the inmates have condemned prison officials for allowing alcohol into the premises and have accused them of corruption.
Authorities periodically confiscate weapons and drugs in the overcrowded prisons of Bolivia but, the inmates bribe prison guards to smuggle them in.
In August 2013, a battle among rival gangs in the Palmasola prison in the eastern city of Santa Cruz in which 35 people died - many of them were burned to death by homemade flamethrowers.
