Pumpkin festival in Keene, New Hampshire, turns ugly – police fire teargas shells


The annual pumpkin festival of Keene, New Hampshire, is usually a low key affair bit, this time around, it was marred by violence and US Riot police had to fire teargas shells to control the crowd news.sky.com. They also made arrests once the pumpkin festival erupted in mayhem.
Reports indicate that at least 30 people were injured during the disorder and twenty people were taken to hospitals. At least 49 arrests were made in the commotion which began on Saturday night and went on into the early hours of Sunday.
This is an annual festival and, during it, the community tries to set a world record for the largest number of carved and lighted jack-o-lanterns in one place. It is described as a "family-friendly celebration". But, trouble broke out due to partying students from Keene State College and out-of-town visitors.
As a witness has remarked – people were hurling rocks, skateboards, buckets, and pumpkins – they just got too drunk.
