Ferry accident in Bangladesh leaves at least 68 dead

#Bangladesh #PadmaRiver #ferry It was a tragedy when an overcrowded double-decker ferry was hit by a cargo vessel and capsized with passengers in the lower deck getting trapped leading to at least 68 deaths as reported in edition.cnn.com dated 23 February 2015.
The incident on the Padma River and it is understood that the boat was packed when it overturned in the Manikganj district north of the capital, Dhaka. This has been conveyed by the local police Chief Bidhan Tripura.
Many of the rescued passengers were on the upper deck and they jumped into the river. The deputy commissioner of Manikganj, Rashida Ferdouse, has admitted that the number of passengers on board the ferry were not known. On a rough estimate there were around 100 passengers and the dead included 19 children.
It seems in August last there had been another deadly ferry accident on the same river in which 45 people died. Overcrowding of ferries and poor monitoring systems are not new to Bangladesh where scores of casualties occur from ferry accidents every year.
