Resurgent left front on Mission Nabanna – police use water cannon, tear gas

After being thrown out of power, the left front in West Bengal had been nursing its wounds for the last four years. All of a sudden, it galvanized into action to wake up from slumber and reveal their true mettle in their march to Nabanna – the Secretariat of West Bengal.
The resultant battle of a resurgent left front with the police left blood splattered on the roads of Kolkata with stones and bricks strewn all over. From appearances, it looked as if the police had been taken by surprise. They had never expected such a display of togetherness.
This has been reported in telegraphindia.com dated 28 august 2015.
The police had to use water cannons and lob tear gas shells and also resort to lathicharge to control the huge crowds. The march to Nabanna was organized by 17 farmers' bodies of the Left and they wanted to demand compensation and rehabilitation for flood-affected farmers apart from higher price for farm produce and other farmer related demands.
The left front was naturally elated at the turnout and their message to the ruling TMC was clear – do not underestimate the left parties. They can still make a dent and this was a wakeup call.
