Upto 100 killed in gas plant explosion in Nnewi, Nigeria on Christmas Eve

It was a tragedy that struck Nigeria on Christmas Eve killing up to 100 people when a ‘huge inferno’ raged at an industrial gas plant in southeastern Nigeria after an explosion that destroyed the plant and nearby houses. Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer and derives the bulk of its money through the commodity and accidents are a frequent occurrence where pipelines are often damaged by people to steal crude oil.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 25December 2015.
The fireball destroyed nearby buildings and left burned corpses littering the plant in Nnewi.
The blaze killed people who had been waiting in line to collect crude oil from the Inter Corp Oil Limited gas plant – this plant is a subsidiary of Nigerian conglomerate Chicason Group.
It seems the fire broke out when a tanker truck had finished emptying fresh gas at the plant and left without waiting to observe the prescribed cooling time. It exploded like a bomb, and the whole gas station went up in thick, black smoke along with an explosion from cooking gas cylinders.
The victims were those who had been in the station waiting in queue to get their cylinders refilled.
Nigeria loses an estimated 300,000 barrels a day to gangs that syphon crude from pipelines in the oil-rich southern states.
