ISIS trying to enter India - 11 youths apprehended in Hyderabad

ISIS was, till now, active in the Middle East and parts of Europe but indications are there that it is trying to make inroads into India. In a joint operation, the Hyderabad police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials have apprehended eleven youths from Old City of Hyderabad. These youngsters were, the police said, preparing to join the terror outfit Islamic State.
This has been reported in thehindu.com dated 29 June 2016.
Three of them have been identified and some weapons seized. It appears they had got in touch with IS handlers operating from abroad through social networking sites like Facebook. As per initial reports, cash and explosive material have been seized from them. This is the second major operation against IS linked youngsters of Hyderabad that has been busted by the police in recent times.
Times of India adds - the youths were allegedly plotting powerful bomb blasts to target VVIPs and crowded places in the city and also intended to trigger communal riots by placing cow and buffalo meat at the Bhagyalakshmi temple at the base of the iconic Charminar.
It may be recalled that a IS module consisting of six persons from Hyderabad had been busted during the country-wide raids by the NIA three months ago. That module had obtained explosive substance and even conducted blast on experimental basis in Narsapur forest of Medak district.
Police are trying to ascertain if the six youths detained now have any links with the previous module.

Suspected al-Shabaab militants launch suicide attack on a hotel in Mogadishu

Suspected al-Shabaab militants have launched a suicide attack on a hotel in the capital Mogadishu killing at least five civilians. As confirmed by local security forces, a suicide bomber is believed to have detonated a truck bomb at the gate of the Naasa-Hablood hotel which was then stormed by a group of heavily-armed men.
The al-Shabaab has links with al-Qaeda and they have claimed responsibility for the attack.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 25 June 2016.
The terrorists are believed to have taken a number of hostages because it is a popular location among the Somali political elite and members of the nation's diaspora who return to the city on business. The terrorists took positions behind blast walls and sandbags and armed guards are trying to repel the militants and, as per reports of eyewitnesses, there was a huge blast followed by heavy machine gunfire.
The intention of the al-Shabaab is to topple the Western-backed government and it has been observed that during Ramadan they target public areas where people gather before they break their daily fast. It may be recalled that in early June an overnight siege by extremist gunmen at another hotel in the capital had left 15 people dead, two of them were members of parliament and al-Shabab had claimed responsibility for that attack also.

Violence in Sirte between ISIS and pro-government militiamen kills at least 60

Fierce clashes in Libya between pro-government militiamen and ISIS jihadists in the city of Sirte and an explosion at a depot near the capital, Tripoli, has left more than 60 dead in just one day. Sirte is believed to be the last bastion of the ISIS group in the North African country and the latest clashes led to the death of 36 militiamen aligned with the newly-UN brokered government. They are mainly from the western town of Misrata and have been leading an offensive since early May to take full control over Sirte.
Along with the 36 militiamen killed, mostly in direct gun battles with ISIS jihadists, Misrata hospital spokesman has indicated that another 140 were wounded in the violence.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 22 June 2016.
ISIS jihadists have apparently gone into hiding at its headquarters in Sirte where the sprawling Ouagadougou convention center had been built by late dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The city was also Gaddafi's birthplace and the city he fled to during the 2011 civil war, when Libyan rebels backed by NATO bombings forced him out of the capital, Tripoli.
Simultaneously, an explosion at a depot in the town of Garabuli, near Tripoli, followed clashes with militias and killed 29 civilians. The clashes here took place between militiamen in charge of the town security and armed local protesters. It seems when the protesters stormed the militia's barracks, the depot exploded - it housed firecrackers, not ammunition.

20-year-old British man wanted to kill Donald Trump in Las Vegas

A 20-year-old British man who wanted to kill Donald Trump, presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has been arrested and the suspect has apparently told investigators that he wanted to kill Donald Trump. This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 21 June 2016.
The man holds a British driving license and he has admitted to a Secret Service agent that he had driven to the city from California with plans to shoot Mr Trump. Terror suspect in Brussels shopping mall wore a fake suicide vest

A terror suspect created a false bomb alert when he told officers that he was wearing a suicide vest. He was detained at the scene and armed police came on the scene and it transpired that the man was not carrying explosives. In fact, he had strapped on his body around his waist a device full of 'salt and biscuits'. As a precautionary measure, police had descended on the City2 Shopping Mall in the heart of the Belgian capital and taped off surrounding roads and closed down five underground stations.
The authorities are investigating whether it was a practical joke or whether there were sinister motives like checking the preparedness of security system. Prime Minister Charles Michel has called the incident 'very suspicious'.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 21 June 2016.
The incident has come a week after anti-terrorism investigators were alerted to the possibility that small groups of ISIS extremists had left Syria for France and Belgium with plans to stage attacks - including at a shopping mall. Belgium's anti-terror office has already warned police that fighters with access to weapons may have left Syria about 10 days ago for Belgium and France.
Belgium has been on high alert ever since November flowing the massacres in Paris that killed 130 people. Later, on March 22, ISIS bombers targeted Brussels airport and subway and killed 32 people. As a result, extra police and military have been mobilised.

Suicide bomb attacks by Taliban kill more than 20 in Afghanistan

At least 20 people were killed in separate suicide bomb attacks in Afghanistan. 14 of them were killed when a minibus was struck a minibus that was transporting Nepaelse security contractors in the capital Kabul. Some time later, a bomb planted in a motorbike killed at least eight civilians and wounded another 18 in a crowded market in the northern province of Badakhshan. The casualty count could increase.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 20 June 2016.
It seems the suicide bomber had waited near a compound housing the security contractors and struck as the vehicle moved through early morning traffic. Apart from bus passengers, many people in an adjacent market were also wounded in the attack during the Muslim holy month of Ramzan.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attacks in Kabul but not for the attack in Badakhshan. Taliban has said that by carrying out this attack, they want to teach Americans and NATO military officials that they have the power to conduct attacks wherever, and whenever, they want.
The Taliban has indicated that those attacks were in revenge for the execution of six Taliban prisoners.

Two brothers arrested from Long Island - another possible massacre prevented

Police have arrested a man from Long Island after finding illegal weapons, ammunition, drugs, bomb-making materials and Nazi paraphernalia in his home in New York State. The 29-year-old was arraigned on weapons and drug possession charges and his bail was set at $100,000. His 25-year-old brother also appeared in court on an outstanding warrant for a minor code violation.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 17 June 2016.
Police had used a search warrant to raid the siblings' house in Mount Sinai, Long Island, and found a .40-calibre Glock, six assault rifles, four rifles, 25 high-capacity magazines, one shotgun, one stun gun and thousands of rounds of ammunition. Moreover, there were also bomb-making instructions, marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms, more than $40,000 in cash, swastikas, photos of Adolf Hitler and other Nazi paraphernalia.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner has said that the two individuals clearly subscribe to a hateful violent ideology and had an illegal arsenal at their fingertips. The search warrant may have prevented a deadly violent incident like the one recently seen in Orlando.

President Obama wants ban on AR-15 type assault weapons that are meant for battlefield

President Obama had wanted to introduce a gun control mechanism and the massacre of 50 persons in a nightclub in Orlando has seen him renew his thoughts. He wants Congress to ban the AR-15 assault rifle which is a fast-loading, easy to use assault weapon. As he has said - these assault weapons are weapons of war and meant for the battlefield, they have no place in the streets. Such a ban used to be in place and it should be re-instituted.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 13 June 2016.
The AR-15 assault rifle is a civilian semi-automatic version of the M-16 rifle, which is fully automatic. The gun is able to reload as soon as the shooter pulls the trigger, are lightweight and easy to assemble. As per records of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, there are between 5 and 8.2 million assault-style weapons in the U.S.
Families of the Sandy Hook killings have sued gun manufacturers after recent mass killings - the weapon used at Sandy Hook was a Bushmaster AR-15.
Hillary Clinton, the Democrat hopeful for the White House, has also endorsed the need for gun control and has renewed her call for the same. In her words, weapons of war have no place on the streets of America.

Bomb blasts kill 20 in Sayyida Zeinab mosque of Damascus

20 people were killed in two bombs blasts outside the Sayyida Zeinab mosque in Damascus. This is the holiest Shiite shrine in Syria. The first blast was by a suicide attacker who was wearing an explosives belt and took place at the entrance of Ziabiyeh district. The second one was the result of a suicide attacker in a car rigged with explosives in al-Teen street.
The attacks came as Sunni and Shia Muslims are celebrating the holy month of Ramadan.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 11 June 2016.
ISIS have subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Syria's Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi has blamed Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, for being behind the 'brutal massacres'. As per information with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a British-based monitoring group, the death toll was 12 with 30 wounded.
The holy shrine is located six miles south of the center of Damascus and is heavily guarded by Assad regime forces. In spite of that, it has been the target of several attacks by ISIS and their acolytes. The last attack on Sayyida Zeinab was on April 25 in which at least seven were killed and dozens wounded. Earlier, in January, there was another attack claimed by ISIS in which 70 people died.

Orlando massacre in gay nightclub - at least 50 dead, 53 wounded, gunman shot dead

The massacre at an Orlando gay nightclub in which at least 50 people have been killed and another 53 injured, has been labeled as a "domestic terror incident." It is the worst mass shooting in U.S. history and the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil since the events of Sept. 11, 2001. President Obama has described the Pulse massacre "an act of terror and an act of hate." He called Mateen, the shooter, "a person filled with hatred."
The shooter has been identified as Omar Mateen of St. Lucie County, Florida. He is a U.S.-born citizen with Afghani parents.
It seems after the shooting began, he called 911 to pledge his allegiance to ISIS and supporters of the terrorist group have cheered the massacre online. However, there is no evidence to suggest that ISIS had directed or had prior knowledge of the attack.
This has been reported in abcnews.go.com dated 12 June 2016.
The FBI has indicated that the gunman Mateen "was organized and well-prepared," and have added that "he is not from this area." He had an assault rifle, handgun and "some kind of device on him." His parents were born in Afghanistan, and he was "on the radar" of U.S. officials for some time, but was not the target of a specific investigation, as reported by law enforcement officials.
At the time of shooting, there were about 320 people inside the Pulse Nightclub.

At least 39 killed in ISIS suicide attacks in Baghdad to divert attention from Fallujah

Islamic State has carried out a number of suicide bombings in Baghdad that have left 39 people dead. The deadliest of these was in a commercial area of a majority Shia neighborhood where at least 15 civilians were killed and 35 wounded.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 10 June 2016.
There was a second blast when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into an Iraqi army checkpoint north of Baghdad killing at least 12 people. The third attack was in the town of Taji 12 miles north of Baghdad. The dead in this were seven civilians and five troops with another 30 injured.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for these attacks but the information could not be independently verified. Baghdad has been the target of near-daily attacks in recent weeks by the Sunni militant group and these are believed to be attempts to distract the attention of the security forces from the fighting taking place on the front line.
Iraqi special forces have pushed into the IS-held city of Fallujah as part of a large-scale military operation launched last month. This city located about 40 miles west of Baghdad, is one of the last major IS strongholds in western Iraq. ISIS is still in control of territory in the country's north, including Mosul, which is Iraq's second largest city.

Delhi police unearths a kidney transplant racket - arrests kingpin from Kolkata

A Delhi police team has unearthed a kidney transplant racket and arrested the kingpin from Rajarhat in Kolkata as he was settling down for a house warming party - he had around 150 guests at the time. The police had already arrested five people. These included two staff members of doctors at Apollo Hospital in Delhi. Their interrogation led the team to the kingpin.
This has been reported in telegraphindia.com dated 9 June 2016.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that touts would lure poor people from various parts of the country, including Bengal, to donate kidneys. They would be paid measly amounts of Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh while the gang would charge several times more from the recipients of the kidneys. The transplantation surgeries were performed at the hospital in Delhi.
The kingpin is believed to belong to Hyderabad and, as indicated by his neighbors, he had bought two houses, 50m apart, in three years and the family kept to themselves. He had let out a story that he owned a saline bottle manufacturing factory in Hyderabad which is why he had to go out of town frequently. He used to receive many visitors but they did not speak Bengali or Hindi or English. Cops feel they might have spoken in Telegu since the man has links to Hyderabad.
As per existing laws, organ transplants can be done only among family members - and it is illegal to sell organs for money.

ISIS cornered as Russian-backed Syrian army enters ISIS stronghold in Raqqa

ISIS is getting cornered in their stronghold in Raqqa province because the Russian-backed Syrian army has crossed the border into the heartland of ISIS. There are indications that they have promised to team up with US-backed rebel forces who share a common hatred of Daesh.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 5 June 2016.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has said that ISIS was retreating as a result of Russian air strikes but this has not been confirmed either by Moscow or by the Assad regime in Damascus. It seems the Assad regime has agreed to join up with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) which is a rebel group dominated by the Kurdish Popular Protection (YPG) militia and that the SDF have 30,000 fighters coming down from Kobani in the north.
In comparison, ISIS has around 5,000 fighters in Raqqa province and the city of Raqqa has been its de facto capital since it was taken in 2014. Now, the Syrian troops plan to take over the Tabqa air base, 30 miles west of the city of Raqqa - that way, they would get an airbase for Russian fighter jets. The short-term objective of the operation is to take over Tabqa and nearby Lake Assad.

Germany arrests three ISIS men who planned an attack on Duesseldorf

Authorities in Germany have arrested three Syrian men suspected of having links with ISIS and planning an attack in Duesseldorf. The plot was nipped by a fourth suspect, who spilled the beans to French authorities with details earlier this year. All the three men were arrested from three different German states.
This has been reported in foxnews.com dated 2 June 2016.
As per the plan, two suicide attackers would blow themselves up in central Duesseldorf and then, further assailants would kill as many people as possible using firearms and explosives. There were no indications to show that they had begun any concrete preparations.
The three men have been identified. Two of them had joined ISIS in Syria in 2014 and had received instructions from the group's leadership to carry out an attack in Duesseldorf. They had, accordingly, traveled to Turkey in May 2014 with IS approval and, then, separately in March and July 2015, to Germany via Greece. They had convinced the third man to join the plot at some point before January this year.
