Mayor of London worried about ISIS attacks on the city

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, has indicated that the terror threat from ISIS is reaching new highs and reducing the budget allocation of the police could cost lives. He has said that the danger of attacks in the capital had risen and ensuring the safety of the people was becoming 'increasingly difficult'.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 4 February 2017.
In his opinion, Donald Trump's travel ban will hand ISIS a powerful propaganda tool. The London Mayor made these comments against the backdrop of the latest apparent terror incident at the Louvre in Paris. He also brought out the point that twelve people were killed and 50 more were injured when a terrorist drove a heavy truck into a packed Christmas market in Berlin at 40mph. And, in July last, 86 people were killed and another 434 were hurt when a jihadi drove a 19-ton lorry into crowds that were celebrating Bastille Day in the French city of Nice.
The Mayor added that the Islamic State is already believed to be having terror cells in the UK and could be plotting to carry out a massacre on the scale of the atrocities in Berlin and Nice.

12 persons killed as truck ploughs into Christmas shoppers in Berlin

12 persons killed and another 48 injured as truck ploughs into Christmas shoppers in Berlin near the Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church in, what is believed to be, a terrorist attack. The truck mowed down the people who had come for Christmas shopping in the market.
This has been reported in nzherald.co.nz dated 20 December 2016.
Local police have arrested an alleged attacker. A second man, believed to be the passenger in the truck, died at the scene. Police armed with machine guns have been patrolling streets around the church, which is one of Berlin's most famous landmarks. It is known as an anti-war memorial to peace and reconciliation.
The overall level of advice for Germany is that travelers should follow normal safety precautions and be aware of the increased threat of terrorism.

All is not well in Europe - 1750 ISIS jihadists have returned to carry out attacks

EU has indicated that nearly 1,750 ISIS jihadists have returned to Europe - some of them have orders to carry out terror attacks. It seems 5,000 European fanatics had gone to Syria and Iraq and 15 to 20 per cent of them have been killed on the battlefield.
However, 35 percent have returned and some of them have come with 'specific missions'. Another 50 percent have remained in the battle arena.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 8 December 2016.
Belgium had expressed concerns on this development. There were two types of 'foreign terrorist fighters' returning and one of these is those who will be sent on specific missions.
Some of the European women and children born or raised in the so-called caliphate declared by ISIS in Iraq and Syria could pose a security threat because of radicalization. Some returnees have been convicted and are serving prison sentences and others are being monitored while some are free in their communities.

Spanish police arrest two suspected ISIS terrorists in Barcelona and Madrid

Spanish police have arrested two suspected ISIS terrorists in Barcelona and Madrid - they were planning to carry out attacks in Spain. The Moroccan pair was 'dangerous' and 'directed and controlled' by the terror group, as revealed by Spanish Ministry of Interior officials.
The two men had isolated themselves from the rest of society and had limited their contact with the outside world through 'radical jihadist profiles' on the internet.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 19 November 2016.
The two of them were held during dawn raids in the Spanish capital and Roda de Ter in the province of Barcelona which is an hour's drive north of the Catalan city. As indicated by a Spanish Ministry of Interior spokesman, the suspects were fully integrated into DAESH, and were following their instructions and their plans of actions.
Moreover, they were also active on the Internet and social media with the aim of radicalizing and recruiting new conscripts. Upon interrogation, they have disclosed a wealth of radical material including propaganda material designed to fill western societies with fear.
Their arrests brought the number of suspected Islamic terrorists held in Spain since the start of last year, when the country went onto a level 4 terror alert, to 215. It may be recalled that earlier this month four people suspected of trying to recruit so-called Caliphate Cubs - child soldiers as young as 12 to fight for ISIS - were held in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta. And, last month two Muslim preachers accused of supporting ISIS were held in the Ibizan party resort of San Antonio.

Taliban attack in Afghanistan kills at least four, injures another more than 110

A Taliban attack in Afghanistan's Mazar-i-Sharif has left at least four people killed and over 110 injured. The target was the German consulate and it was targeted by a suicide truck bomb with subsequent attack by Taliban militants.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 11 November 2016.
It seems one terrorist detonated a car bomb near the gate of the consulate killing himself and one other person. Those injured were residents and the death toll could increase because some of the injured remained in critical condition.
The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack shortly after the blast. A spokesman of the Taliban has indicated that the attack was retaliation for recent airstrikes in Kunduz from the "invading countries" which caused civilian casualties. It may be recalled that on November 3, there was a series of air strikes carried out by NATO-led forces on outskirts of provincial capital Kunduz city subsequent to ground operations conducted by foreign and Afghan security forces positioned there.

British police have foiled 12 terror plots against Britain in the last three years

UK police and intelligence services have foiled 12 terror plots against Britain in the last three years. MI5 director has indicated that ISIS extremists in Iraq and Syria pose the most significant threat. He has also added that British intelligence agencies have 'good defenses' and has also warned that they will not find and stop all attacks.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 31 October 2016.
It seems assault weapons like those used in the Paris terror attacks are being smuggled into Britain by criminals gangs and sold on to terrorists. The majority of these illegal weapons come from Eastern Europe, where rules on reactivated guns are not as strict as the UK. Moreover, the majority of weapons seized are of very poor quality and have been reactivated often from the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
National Crime Agency, often referred to as Britain's FBI, and the Met Police have revealed that they have observed an increase in deactivated guns being reactivated in Eastern Europe and coming into Britain by sea, air and even by post. Some of the illegal weapons are bought on the Dark Web or from licensed owners that have either sold or had their weapons stolen.
In addition, there has been a rise in gang violence in British cities because of criminals competing over turf and some of the members have even joined terrorist cells after radicalization on the streets or in jail. Hence, the picture is quite grim.

Terrorists attack police training college in Quetta and at least 51 reported killed

Three terrorists had attacked a police training college in Quetta and an operation had to be launched by military and Frontier Corps forces to clear the premises which houses at least 600 police cadets. At least 51 people, most of them cadets, were killed and 97 others were injured in the attack.
This has been reported in thestatesman.com dated 25 October 2016.
There were three terrorists, all wearing suicide vests, and were reportedly in contact with their handlers in Afghanistan. Two of the suicide attackers blew themselves up, which resulted in casualties, and the third one was shot dead by the troops.
The training college is situated on Sariab Road, believed to be one of the most sensitive areas of Quetta.
Incidentally, militants have been targeting security forces in the area for almost a decade and, the training college has come under attack in the past in 2008 and 2006 when attackers had fired rockets into the college playground.
The college is spread over an acre of land and is located about 13 kilometres outside the main city of Quetta.

Pakistani terrorists use ladder to climb over the electrified fence at the LoC

Four Pakistani terrorists had gained entry into India by using a ladder to climb over the electrified fence at the LoC - they then massacred 19 soldiers in cold blood in the Army camp of Uri last month.
Investigations carried out by the Army have brought to light the fact that one of the four terrorists who mounted the brazen attack in Uri, about 102 km from Srinagar, first infiltrated into Indian territory by taking advantage of the gaps along the fence near the Salamabad nallah. He then erected a ladder on the Indian side of the fence. The other three had a ladder on their side and the two ladders were connected like a pedestrian bridge.
This has been reported in thehindu.com dated 17 October 2016.
They used this method because it was difficult for all the four to infiltrate through the gap used by the first terrorist since each of them carried heavy rucksacks filled with ammunition, weapons and eatables.
After infiltrating into India, they handed over the ladder to the guides who had accompanied them up to the LoC to ensure that there were no tell-tale signs.
The Army is conducting an inquiry at Gohallan and adjoining village Jablah because they suspect that the terrorists might have holed up there before they carried out the attack on September 18.

MI5 agent reveals how he tracked down a suspected Islamic terrorist

It was like a mission from the story books - the MI5 agent had dressed up as a tramp in urine-soaked clothes and sat in front of a mosque while tracking a suspect. He was part of an MI5 team that was tracking a suspected Islamist terrorist and he sat outside a London mosque during evening prayers. To make it look realistic, he was dressed as a tramp and pretended to ask for change. His own clothes were soaked in his own urine to compliment that cover.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 4 October 2016.
While keeping watch, he observed that the number of woman worshippers who left was more than the number that had gone in. He immediately alerted the team that there was a possibility the suspect had changed his appearance. Actually, he had changed into a burka and was pretending to be a woman. Agents of the MI5 team called in a Special Forces unit to arrest the terrorist and two Range Rovers slammed into the suspect's car. The man was dragged him out of the car and the team found weapons and pipe bombs in the boot.
His planned target was for the very next day. It seems he was waiting for a couple of coach loads of children who were returning from a trip to France and his plan was to kill them, the teachers and the parents.
The MI5 agent had spent 10 years as a surveillance agent for British intelligence.

Hillary Clinton reiterates that US will not put ground troops in Iraq and Syria

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has reiterated that the US will not put ground troops into Iraq and Syria in the military campaign against the Islamic State (IS) militant group. It was the stand taken by Barack Obama and Clinton wants to continue with the same. In her opinion, putting a large contingent of American ground troops in Iraq and Syria would not be in the best interest of the fight against the IS and other terrorist groups.
This has been reported in thestatesman.com dated 9 September 2016.
She did not want to drag the US back into a ground war in the Middle East but would prefer to continue US President Barack Obama's current anti-IS strategy in spite of severe criticism from the Republicans. She admitted that she would support the air campaign, special forces and the enablers. She would also support surveillance, intelligence and reconnaissance and would be prepared to do whatever is necessary to support the Arab and Kurdish fighters on the ground so that they can destroy as much of the infrastructure of the IS from the air.
And, she will also be committed to target-killing of IS leadership.
Incidentally, at present there are about 5,000 US troops in Iraq and several hundreds more are dispatched to northern Syria. But, they do not fall in the category of "ground troops" because they are not combat troops and are there to assist and train local forces in their fight against the IS.

ISIS trying to enter India - 11 youths apprehended in Hyderabad

ISIS was, till now, active in the Middle East and parts of Europe but indications are there that it is trying to make inroads into India. In a joint operation, the Hyderabad police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials have apprehended eleven youths from Old City of Hyderabad. These youngsters were, the police said, preparing to join the terror outfit Islamic State.
This has been reported in thehindu.com dated 29 June 2016.
Three of them have been identified and some weapons seized. It appears they had got in touch with IS handlers operating from abroad through social networking sites like Facebook. As per initial reports, cash and explosive material have been seized from them. This is the second major operation against IS linked youngsters of Hyderabad that has been busted by the police in recent times.
Times of India adds - the youths were allegedly plotting powerful bomb blasts to target VVIPs and crowded places in the city and also intended to trigger communal riots by placing cow and buffalo meat at the Bhagyalakshmi temple at the base of the iconic Charminar.
It may be recalled that a IS module consisting of six persons from Hyderabad had been busted during the country-wide raids by the NIA three months ago. That module had obtained explosive substance and even conducted blast on experimental basis in Narsapur forest of Medak district.
Police are trying to ascertain if the six youths detained now have any links with the previous module.

Ukraine police arrest a French citizen to foil terror bid during Euro 2016

The Euro 2016 tournament is scheduled to be organized in France from June 10 to July 10 and the Ukraine police has arrested a French citizen who is suspected of planning terror attacks to coincide with the Euro 2016 European football championship. The Frenchman had apparently talked in a negative way about his government`s actions relating to the mass migration of foreigners and the spread of Islam. He has also disclosed a plan to commit a series of terrorist attacks as a mark of protest.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 7 June 2016.
It seems he was plotting 15 attacks in France targeting Muslim and Jewish houses of worship, bridges, highways, a tax collecting office and buildings of public institutions involved in the organization of Euro 2016. Police detained him when he was attempting to cross the Ukrainian-Polish border.
Details of the suspect have not been disclosed but, he had traveled to Ukraine intending to buy weapons from the armed groups, which are involved in the confrontation in eastern regions. Preliminary investigations indicate that he had acquired 125 kg of explosives, 5 Kalashnikov assault rifles, more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition and other weapons as a part of his arsenal.

ISIS terrorists are arriving in Europe in the guise of refugees

Fears have been expressed in certain quarters that ISIS is 'spreading like cancer' and terrorists in the guise of refugees are arriving in Europe. This has been revealed by a US General who is the Commander of NATO's European unit. In his opinion, the arrival of thousands of migrants in to the continent is 'masking the movement' of violent extremists, criminals and foreign fighters.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 1 March 2016.
The US Air Force General has informed the Senate Armed Services Committee that these dangerous elements heightened the potential for a terror attack. Within this mix of people from different background, ISIS is 'taking advantage of paths of least resistance and is a threat to European nations as well as the United States.
The General has asked for more U.S. forces to be permanently based in Europe because it is facing threats from a more aggressive Russia as well as the ISIS. His requirement is for Army troops that could be ready to respond quickly to any crisis or military need. The Pentagon has decreased the number of US forces in Europe over the last several years, and has, instead, shifted focus to the Asia Pacific while fighting continues in the Middle East. However, in view of the increasing threats from Russia and ISIS questions are being raised about those decisions.
It is estimated that about 6,000 foreign fighters have left to join the fight in Syria and Iraq, and out of that, some 1,500 of them have returned to Europe. As per information of the International Organization for Migration, almost 130,000 migrants - or, more than 2,000 each day - have reached Europe by sea since the beginning of this year and 418 have died in the attempts, most drowning in the cold, rough waters. This means that the number of arrivals in the first two months of 2016 is more than 11 times as many as the same period last year.

Terrorists could carry out drone attacks on major sporting events like Superbowl in UK and USA

Intelligence experts have warned that terrorists could launch 'drone attacks' on major sporting events in Europe and the US. This has been indicated by analysts at the Open Briefing think tank - terrorists could use a swarm of drones, which are cheap and accessible, to attack crowds of people at an event like the Superbowl.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 24 February 2016.
In the opinion of exerts, attacks of this nature could be launched by sleeper cells or lone wolves who have been brainwashed by ISIS or al-Qaeda terrorists because ISIS are already making use of drones in Iraq and Syria for intelligence gathering. In fact, they are in direct competition now with al-Qaeda and are desperate to launch a mass casualty attack on Western targets.
Moreover, the ISIS propaganda machine could use the drones, fitted with cameras, to film the attacks taking place. Drones are freely available and there was no single counter-measure to prevent such attacks. A major stumbling block is that drones just cannot be shot down in an urban environment or at a packed stadium because of the high risk of collateral damage.
In addition, even a small drone that can carry up to 10-Kg of explosives or a suicide vest, could become a lethal item if directed at a high profile target such as a politician. There have been instances in the past. One option to prevent such situations would be for intelligence agencies to pick up the movement of suspicious individuals as they bought the drones.

President Obama says US will counter terrorists anywhere in the world

#BarackObama #ISIS #libya #NationalSecurityCouncil #terrorists President Barack Obama is determined to root out the evils of terrorism and has said that the US will continue to counter terror plotters of Islamic State militant group where ever they may be. He said this while directing his national security team to intensify its ongoing counter-terrorism campaign in order to destroy the terror outfit.
This has been reported in ibnlive.com dated 29 January 2016.
He made his position clear in the course of a meeting with his National Security Council. His idea of the US campaign is to degrade and destroy Islamic State (ISIS). The White House has confirmed that the President has emphasized that the US will continue to counter ISIL (another name of ISIS) terrorist plotters in any country where it is necessary.
Since the ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) affiliates and other violent extremists keep trying to identify safe havens, especially in areas that have limited or poor governance, the Resident has directed his national security team to continue efforts to strengthen governance in those areas and extend support to ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in Libya and other such countries.

ISIS militants planning suicide attacks in Brussels arrested in Belgium

Police in Belgium have arrested two suspected ISIS militants on suspicion of planning attacks in Brussels on New Year's Eve. The duo was held during house searches in the Brussels area, the Liege region and Flemish Brabant. It seems military-style training uniforms, ISIS propaganda and computer material were also seized and are being examined.
this has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 29 December 2015.
As per the preliminary investigation, it has been revealed that there was threat of serious attacks that would target several emblematic places in Brussels and would be carried out during the end-of-year holidays. A total of six people were taken in for questioning, but four were subsequently released while two were placed under arrest. Charges against them are - participation in the activities of a terrorist group as a leader or recruiter with the aim of committing terrorist offenses as principal or secondary actor.
Infirmation from the office of the prosecutor has indicated that no additional details would be made public, but that the probe was not connected to the November 13 attacks in Paris.
The action comes after Austrian police said a 'friendly' intelligence service had warned European capitals of the possibility of a shooting or bomb attack before New Year. This prompted police across the continent to increase security measures. Some of these are surveillance in crowded spaces 'especially at events and traffic hubs' apart from intensive identity checks and higher alertness for objects which could carry explosives such as bags or 'bicycle frames'.

United States faced with Syrian refugee influx - nearly 100,000 have entered since 2012

#syrianrefugees #terrorists #CounterTerrorism While a proposal to admit 10,000 Syrian refugees to the United States has ignited a bitter debate in Washington, the reality is that there are more than 10 times that number of people from Syria who have quietly come to America since 2012.
This has been reported in foxnews.com dated 16 December 2015.
Some 102,313 Syrians were granted admission to the U.S. as legal permanent residents or through programs including work, study and tourist visas from 2012 through August of this year - this period roughly coincides with the devastating civil war that still engulfs the Middle Eastern country.
In the opinion of experts, any fears that terrorists might infiltrate the proposed wave of refugees from United Nations-run camps would be less when compared with the potential danger that is already there.
These Syrians have arrived on all kinds of visas and with green cards, and possibly U.S. citizenship. That makes it impossible for our counter-terrorism authorities to keep track of them all. Equally difficult would it be to prevent them from carrying out attacks or belatedly try to deport them.
The numbers have been obtained from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection - it shows 60,010 Syrian visa holders have entered the U.S. since 2012, including 16,245 this year through August. Additional numbers have been provided by a Congressional source and it revealed that another 42,303 Syrians were granted citizenship or green cards during the same period.
Most of these Syrians have secured legal entry before they arrive.

Two men of Syrian origin caught in Geneva with explosives

With terrorists surfacing in the most unexpected of places, it is becoming a major problem for security agencies to tackle this new and growing menace. Two people of Syrian origin had been arrested in Geneva - it is suspected that the duo was transporting 'explosives and toxic gases'. This was revealed as a part of a probe into a terror threat.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 12 December 2015.
Both of them are accused of the 'manufacture, concealment and transport of explosives and toxic gases' as informed by the office of the federal prosecutor's office.
Moreover, they are also under suspicion of violating Swiss law prohibiting 'groups like Al-Qaeda, Islamic State and similar organizations'. The arrest happened in the Geneva region and the police have confirmed about finding traces of explosives inside the car.
The western city has remained on high alert as a result of increased jihadist threat in Switzerland. The Geneva region has raised its alert level to three on a five-point scale following fears of a potential terror attack. Armed police were deployed at sensitive locations across the city, which is home to the UN's European headquarters.
Incidentally, Geneva is almost entirely enclosed by France, a country still reeling from the jihadist attacks that left 130 people dead in Paris last month.

Swiss police hunting for four terrorists linked to the Paris attack

The Swiss police are searching for four terror suspects and the national security alert level has been raised as guards, armed with with MP5 sub-machine guns, have been stationed at the entry points to the United Nations complex in Geneva.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 10 December 2015.
The Swiss federal police do not have any information linking suspects to the deadly attacks in Paris last month in which 130 people were killed. But, Swiss federal authorities have tipped-off the officers. The department of security has indicated that the Geneva police, on the basis of this information, have increased their level of vigilance and reinforced the number of police agents on the ground.
Geneva is located more than 250 miles southeast of Paris and the police in Belgium and elsewhere have been on the lookout of one suspect who had rented a car which was used to carry the gunmen to the Bataclan theater in Paris. The Brussels-based suspect, who is believed to be the brother of one of the suicide bombers, is thought to have fled Paris on the night of the massacres. The third gunman who was involved in the attack on the music hall has also been identified as a 23-year-old man from Strasbourg.

With nearly two million people traveling out every day during Thanksgiving, the United States security are on tenterhooks fearing terrorist attacks. Travelers are being warned of facing long queues at airports as they head home for Thanksgiving with fears of a terrorist attack hanging on their heads.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 25 November 2015.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipates this week to be the busiest travel season in its history and the estimate of more than two million passengers expected to take a flight each day during the holiday period, it will be the highest figure since 2007.
AAA has predicted that 42 million people will travel at least 50 miles for Thanksgiving.
