The cruise was supposed to be an escape to the Caribbean sunshine for a week of parties, relaxation and sipping champagne while watching gorgeous sunsets from the decks of a luxury cruise ship. However, within 4-days into the journey, there was panic in the air. Rumors began doing the rounds that all was not well on board.
The captain, finally, confirmed over the PA system that among their number was a woman who had worked as a lab supervisor at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. It seems she had processed clinical samples from a 42-year-old Liberian man who was the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States and who died on October 8, four days before the ship sailed.
As a result, the lab supervisor, and her husband, were voluntarily quarantined in their cabin as fear spread on the ship and the ship returned back to Galveston. A sample taken from the woman had since tested negative for Ebola.
The Carnival Magic, subsequently, sailed on to Mexico where it was scheduled to dock in the port of Cozumel. Carnival has offered compensation of US$200 to each passenger on board, and a 50 per cent discount on future cruises apart from an apology for missing the Mexican stop.
