Elevator breakdown in the Grand Canyon Caverns trapped a group of tourists 210ft below the ground

The Grand Canyon Caverns offer an exciting experience of touring 210 ft underground. However, the unexpected can happen at any time. A team of five were stuck for more than 24 hours after they completed a 30-minute tour of the caverns. The group consisted of a man, his wife with two young children and at least two elderly persons in their 70s. They were 21 storeys below ground level and preparing to return when they discovered the lift was not working. It was Sunday night local time and panic set in. The arrangement allows the tourists to tour an ancient cave and stay in an underground hotel 120 miles southwest of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Obviously, it was a tricky situation. Fortunately, one member of the group climbed the emergency staircase to the surface. He was thus able to notify the authorities who took necessary measures to rescue the trapped tourists. Five tourists hoisted to safety after lift stops working... 210ft under Grand Canyon Caverns.

According to the Police, five members of the stranded party were "not capable of self-evacuating using the emergency staircase." They had to remain in a hotel suite at the bottom of the cavern overnight. That was after the authorities took a decision that they should stay there while the elevator was repaired. This action ensured their safety and access to food as they awaited rescue. The rescue workers arranged to secure each of the tourists in a harness and lift them one by one up the shaft. Each rescue operation took approximately 15 minutes and no one was injured. The complete process had a touch of professionalism.

Taiwan opens its doors to tourists after easing COVID-19 border curbs

Businesses related to tourism in Taiwan, are happy. The country has eased some of the world’s most stringent COVID-19 border curbs. As a result, there is a boost in sales. Travelers are trickling into Taoyuan International Airport soon after Taiwan scrapped its quarantine and isolation rules. However, visitors have to wear their masks. They must also provide proof of vaccination, take rapid COVID-19 tests and monitor their health for seven days. There were travelers at the airport for the first time in more than two years. The reopening announcement came two weeks ago. Since then, the travel scenario saw a rise in bookings and airlines added flights to accommodate the increase in demand. An official of a travel agency said tour bookings have increased by 20 percent. Many of the agencies had to rough it out over the past two years with sharp drops in revenue. They had to reduce on staff members. Tourism, businesses cheer as Taiwan reopens borders for international travel. Packages to popular destinations like Japan and South Korea are selling out fast. This is in spite of rising prices due to increased airfares and costs.

Incidentally, in 2019, about 17 million Taiwanese travelled overseas but the number dropped by 98 percent last year. The tourism industry accounts for about 4 to 5 percent of the island’s gross domestic product (GDP) before the pandemic. Apart from tourism, other businesses like hotels and restaurants are eager to see the return of tourists. Some of the retailers were working extra hours to stock up on products ahead of the reopening to meet an expected increase in demand. According to health authorities, the decision to reopen the borders came only after Taiwan confirmed that more than 70 percent of its population have taken their booster shots. They also have an adequate supply of vaccines, rapid test kits and medication for patients.

ISIS hatches diabolical plan to massacre tourists on Mediterranean beaches

ISIS is hatching plans to carry out terror attacks across Europe this summer - they would be targeting holidaying tourists by posing as innocent ice cream and T-shirt sellers. This has been revealed by Italian intelligence chiefs. According to BND (Germany's equivalent of MI6), the beaches which are definitely targeted include resorts in southern France, the Costa del Sol in Spain and both coasts in Italy.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 19 April 2016.
German media has indicated that ISIS is sending jihadists who would pretend to be selling refreshments before detonating suicide vests and bombs that would be buried under sun loungers at Spanish, French and Italian resorts. The intention is to bring bloodshed to holiday resorts.
The Italians came to know about the sinister terror plans through a credible source in Africa. The would-be killers had formed 'concrete plans' to pose as refugees serving tourists with drinks and snacks or hawking beach accessories and T-shirts. Their plans involve the use of automatic weapons on crowded waterfronts, suicide bombings and explosive devices buried in sand beneath sun loungers.
ISIS is squeezed financially as the international coalition ranged against it in the Middle East hampers its movement and military actions and it is, therefore, on the lookout of more soft targets in the west - their solution is the holiday bombing plans.
