All is not well in Nigeria – release of kidnapped school girls of Chibok hangs in the balance

Following the announcement of a ceasefire by President Goodluck Jonathan, speculation was rife that the 200 teenage schoolgirls kidnapped from their school in Chibok and held captive by Boko Haram would be released soon. But – recent developments have put a bug question mark on the fate of the girls.

However, in spite of the ceasefire, security sources and witnesses have revealed that the suspected insurgents had attacked the village of Abadam on Friday night, killing at least one person and ransacking homes. The next day, there was another attack on the village of Dzur in which at least eight people died.
It is the practice of Boko Haram to pass on its messages in videos by its supposed leader, Abubakar Shekau – he has not yet commented on the ceasefire. Hence, in view of continued attacks, the efficacy of the ceasefire appears to be in doubt.

Boko Haram is an outfit that has killed thousands of people in its attempt to establish an Islamic state in religiously mixed Nigeria where just over half of the country’s 167 million people are Muslim, and most of the remaining are Christians.

Boko Haram to free 200 schoolgirls kidnapped six months ago

At long last, after nearly six months, the Nigerian government has arrived at a cease fire deal with Boko Haram militants for the release of 200 schoolgirls who had been kidnapped from a school in the northeast town of Chibok nzherald.co.nz. This has been announced by the country's military and president.

As per information furnished by the Principal Secretary of President Goodluck Jonathan, a ceasefire had been brokered with Boko Haram following talks.
The negotiators have "assured that the schoolgirls and all other people in their captivity are all alive and well". However, there have been unconfirmed reports that some of the girls have been carried across borders, and some have also been forced to marry their captors.

It may be recalled that the Boko Haram militants has been demanding the release of detained extremists in exchange for the girls. Michelle Obama and Angelina Jolie had taken up the cause of release of the girls and had joined in the global campaign to free the kidnapped schoolgirls.

Boko Haram kills 30 in attack in Nigerian market

Boko Haram militants opened fire on traders and customers in a busy Nigerian marketplace killing at least 30. The attack has been described as a method to get food and related consumables … the attackers apparently looted food items and money from the traders aol.com.
It is understood that the International Committee of the Red Cross was acting as mediator between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram to negotiate the release of more than 200 schoolgirls who were kidnapped back in April. The Red Cross was making efforts to reach a deal whereby Nigeria would release 30 captured Boko Haram commandos in exchange of the approximately 224 girls who are still being held captive.
This is a surprise because Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan had publicly maintained that the government would never negotiate with the terror group.
An anonymous Red Cross official has said that the two Boko Haram negotiators have assured the ICRC and government negotiators that the girls were never raped, were never used as sex slaves and were never sexually assaulted.

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen attack Nigerian College – at least 15 killed and 35 injured

Gunmen suspected to belong to the Boko Haram Islamist group have reportedly stormed a higher education college in northern Nigeria and fired on fleeing students and set off an explosion in an attack that killed at least 15 people and left another 35 wounded 35 dailymail.co.uk. The college was the Federal College of Education in Kano.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack in the region's main city of Kano, but the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, had been repeatedly targeting civilians in the north and is likely to be a prime suspect. Police that arrived at the scene have killed two of the attackers.
Incidentally, members of Boko Haram, whose name means 'Western education is forbidden', are fighting to carve out an Islamic state in Nigeria and keep targeting western-style schools. Their attacks have been involved in several secondary school massacres and the abduction of 200 school girls in April from the village of Chibok.
Of course, they do not attack schools that teach Islamic doctrines.
The administration of President Goodluck Jonathan along with the armed forces face of Nigeria have been criticized for their inability to counter the threats of Boko Haram.
