Amnesty International reports that 130 Chinese firms are exporting tools of torture

Amnesty International has reported that a growing number of Chinese companies are exporting "tools of torture" like electric shock batons, restraint chairs, and spiked metal batons that was giving rise to abuses in Africa and Asia bbc.com.
Today, over 130 firms were involved in such trade and the figure ten years ago was only 28 – in the opinion of Patrick Wilcken, Amnesty's security trade and human rights researcher, the flawed export system in China has allowed such trade in torture and repression to prosper.
He feels China should "fundamentally reform its trade regulations to end the irresponsible transfer of law enforcement equipment to agencies who will likely use it to violate human rights". Some of the items exported were "intrinsically cruel" and should be banned.
Some of the exports are used in legitimate law enforcement operations, but, China has also exported equipment that has inhumane effects, or poses a substantial risk of fuelling human rights violations by foreign law enforcement agencies. Incidentally, last year the top Court in China has banned torture but, in reality, abusing of detainees remains widespread.
