It seems Boko Haram captured Bama – as per the 2006 census, its population was about 270,000.
The militants had apparently arrived in tanks and armored trucks and first seized the military barracks in the town. Many of the residents fled on foot, some of them walked all the way to Maiduguri.,br> The Military sources have said that the army was still in control of Bama which is the second biggest town in Borno state. As per reports of Nigerian security sources, the assault had been repelled and about 70 militants had been killed. Borno state had been in the news because, in April, the militants had captured more than 200 teenage girls from a boarding school in the town of Chibok.
Boko Haram had recently declared that it had established an Islamic state in the towns and villages it controls in north-eastern Nigeria.
The capture of Bama by Boko Haram is seen by observers as an extremely significant development because it would raise concerns that the next target of the militants will be Maiduguri, the state capital about 70-Km away.
