Britain is red-faced and is feeling the pinch of child brides – these brides are just into puberty and are getting married off to older men dailymail.co.uk. The girls belong to families who are originally from Hungary – they are the 250,000 Romany gypsies who have relocated to the UK from Eastern Europe over the last decade. And – they have brought along with them their tradition of marrying off girls and boys once they reach the age of 13. The legal age for marriage in Hungary is 16, but the authorities often turn a blind eye. It seems under the traditional Pachiv Gypsy code, families must pay a bride price for the girls - often of up to £5,000. However, since many are not able to afford that sort of money, the girls can change hands for as little as £3,000. In the UK, youthful marriage often brings unwanted attention from the police. But, in the prevalent gypsy culture, nothing much can be done because with the early marriages, the girls do not get a chance to go to school or get educated and, in the end, land up begging or stealing.
