Believe it or not, during this spring's anti-government street demonstrations, rising price of breast implants became a major issue along with signs against food shortages and currency devaluation.
As per available statistics, Doctors in Venezuela had carried out nearly 85,000 implants last year, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. It may be noted that only the U.S., Brazil, Mexico and Germany - all with significantly larger populations – have performed more procedures.
Incidentally, beauty-obsessed Venezuelans are faced with a scarcity of quality breast implants, and they are so desperate that doctors are compelled to turn to devices that are the wrong size or made in China, with less rigorous quality standards.
Implants that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration used to be readily available in Venezuela but such items have vanished from the stores and it is practically impossible to find them because of restrictive currency controls mean due to which local businesses cannot afford to import foreign goods.
In the absence of authentic and better quality products of U.S. brands, China is cashing in on the shortage with implants that are worth about a third of the $600 price tag of those approved by European regulators.
