Failed coup attempt in Turkey - 161 people killed and 1,440 wounded

A failed coup attempt in Turkey has left at least 161 people dead and more than 1,440 injured and Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has confirmed to his supporters that he is still in charge. He said that the attempted coup by soldiers "pointed the people's guns against the people".
Turkey's prime minister, Binali Yildirim has said that the situation is completely under control.
Speaking outside Istanbul Ataturk Airport, the President condemned the uprising as an act of "treason" and went on to add - "The president, whom 52% of the people brought to power, is in charge. This government brought to power by the people, is in charge.... They won't succeed as long as we stand against them by risking everything."
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 16 July 2016.
A total of 2,839 military personnel were arrested after a group calling itself the Council for Peace in the Homeland declared martial law and a curfew. Prime Minister Yildirim has indicated that those who have been detained included ordinary soldiers as well as high-ranking officers. 20 of the plotters had died and another 30 had been wounded.
Pro-coup soldiers who had seized Istanbul's Bosporus bridge had abandoned their tanks and surrendered. Blasts were also heard at Istanbul's famous Taksim Square, where large crowds gathered after news of the attempted coup broke.
The Turkish military's acting chief of staff has gone on to add that those who took part in the uprising were from the air force, the gendarmerie, and what he called "armoured elements". While Turkey did not have the death penalty, legal changes would be considered to make sure that such an incident was not repeated.
