Fire in a mosque in Texas - the Islamic Center of Victoria badly damaged

Islamic Center of Victoria, a mosque in Texas, has been badly damaged by a fire just hours after President Donald Trump signed an executive order restricting migration from seven predominantly Muslim countries. The fire was noticed by a clerk at a convenience store. He spotted smoke and flames billowing from the mosque at around 2am on Saturday.
The fire department spent more than four hours trying to battle the blaze. Photographs showed the dome toppled, and as the center's president has said: 'It looks completely destroyed.'
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 29 January 2017.
The imam of the mosque was awake in the early morning hours and, on checking the mosque's online surveillance, found that the alarm was inactive and the doors were unlocked. Just last week, someone had gained entry into the mosque and stole a number of electronic items, including laptops. In addition to the break-in, the mosque was subject to vandalism in July 2013 when a man painted 'H8' or 'hate' outside the building.
The mosque had been built in 2000, and has enjoyed support from the city 115 miles southwest of Houston.

ISIS had plans to launch chemical warfare - evidence unearthed in Mosul

Iraqi special forces have unearthed evidence that tends to indicate that Islamic State were planning to launch a chemical warfare from western Mosul by using long and short-range missiles tipped with chemical or biological war heads. This assumption is based on analysis of material that have been taken by French special forces working with Iraqi units in the city.
It seems there is a warehouse and unloading area near the Tigris River where dozens of missiles were stored alongside makeshift launchers. These weapons had Russian markings and are thought to have come from Syria. Most of the missiles were designed to be fired by jets but one, a 10ft-long missile, is a type of Scud. Even if it was released from a makeshift launcher, it could carry its lethal payload quite far.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 28 January 2017.
Islamic State fighters had been working on the Scud and the area smelt strongly of chemicals. The French soldiers advised the Iraqi team to observe all precautions since the whole area was contaminated and necessary tests were being carried out to determine the nature of the chemicals.
There were large refrigerated cargo carriers and these were loaded with coking coal but, buried inside, there were containers with the unidentified substance. There have been allegations of the use of chemical weapons, particularly chlorine, in the Syrian conflict. However, the latest discovery of a substance probably more lethal than chlorine, is a new development.

Bomb blast in a vegetable market in Parachinar kills at least 20

A bomb exploded at a vegetable market in northwest Pakistan in the city of Parachinar, a mainly Shia Muslim area on the Afghan border. It has left at least 20 dead and another 40 wounded. At the time, the market was full of shoppers and officials believe that the death toll could rise.
A faction of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) said it was behind the blast - its intention was "to avenge the killing of our associates". The group wanted to "teach a lesson to Shiites for their support for Bashar al-Assad." The obvious reference was to the Syrian president.
This has been reported in bbc.com dated 21 January 2017.
The spokesman of the group warned that his Sunni Muslim group will continue to attack Shia Muslims if they back President Assad because his regime is entrenched in a six-year civil war that has claimed more than 310,000 lives. The exact source of the blast is still not known. It could be from an improvised explosive device (IED) hidden in a vegetable box. Or, it could be a suicide bomber.
Pakistan's soldiers had cordoned off the bomb site, and Army helicopters were sent to evacuate the injured. Incidentally, Parachinar is the capital of the Kurram, one of Pakistan's seven tribal districts. In December 2015, an IED blast at the same market had killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 30.

26-year-old man mows down four people and injures another 25 in Melbourne CBD

26-year-old man with a history of mental health and drug abuse issues mows down four people and injures another 25 in Melbourne CBD. The man drove into a street crowded with pedestrians and has been identified. He had been charged with family violence offenses last weekend and was out on bail.
The dead included a man in his 30s, a woman in her 30s, and a young 10-year-old Jewish girl.
Police have confirmed it was not a terrorism related incident.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 20 January 2017.
The killer is in hospital after being shot in the arm by police after dragging him out from the vehicle. He has been accused of deliberately ploughing into pedestrians in Melbourne's city centre during the lunchtime rush.
Officers tried to intercept his vehicle, but called off the chase before he entered the downtown area - it seems he was driving so erratically and they had apprehension that a chase through the city might endanger the community. Incidentally, before he went on the rampage through Melbourne, he was involved in a domestic stabbing incident in a suburb earlier in the day.

ISIS destroys portions of Roman amphitheatre in the ancient city of Palmyra

ISIS militants have destroyed part of the Roman amphitheatre in the ancient city of Palmyra. As indicated by Syria's antiquities chief, the tetrapylon - a group of four pillared structures which were mainly modern replicas - have also been ruined.
The jihadists had recaptured the UNESCO-listed archaeological site in December from government troops and had destroyed other monuments after it first seized Palmyra in May 2015. ISIS had held the site and nearby city known locally as Tadmur for 10 months.
This has been reported in bbc.com dated 20 January 2017.
ISIS had been forced out by a Russian-backed government offensive in March 2016, but they regained control when the pro-government forces where focused on battling for the city of Aleppo late last year. Reports of the destruction had initially come out of Palmyra late in December, and subsequently, satellite images have confirmed the destruction.
It seems only two of the tetrapylon's columns remain, and from all appearances, the monument has been intentionally destroyed by the use of explosives. Only one of the structure's columns is original, the others had been rebuilt in 1963.

Kim Jong-Un plans to send a message to Donald Trump by launching a missile

Kim Jong-Un of North Korea plans to send a message to Donald Trump by testing another missile. It would be a high-profile launch and it would coincide with the inauguration of Donald Trump as US President on Friday. As per a news report, two new missiles had been loaded onto mobile launchers.
These missiles are believed to be equipped with new engines that North Korea had tested last April, when Pyongyang said they would 'guarantee' an eventual nuclear strike on the US mainland.
Incidentally, Donald Trump has said that he would be willing to invite Kim to the United States to discuss the nuclear issue and hoped that he could talk Kim out of his nuclear missile affairs.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 19 January 2017.
The existence of the missiles has apparently been leaked by Pyongyang in order to send a 'strategic message' to incoming US president Donald Trump who is to be sworn in on Friday. Kim Jong-Un has recently stated that his country was in the final stages of developing inter-continental ballistic missiles.
The satellite images of the Yongbyon nuclear facility has revealed that preparations had been taking place which would suggest that North Koreans were about to resume production of plutonium.
The Pentagon has already deployed a high-tech sea-based X-band radar system which will maintain a watch for a possible launch of a North Korean long-range missile.

A state of emergency declared in The Gambia, UK tourists to be flown back

The Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has declared a state of emergency in the country after refusing to hand over power to opposition leader Adama Barrow, who won last month's election. Mr Jammeh had ruled the country for 22 years and had initially acknowledged Mr Barrow as the winner but later he said that the ballot count was flawed and lodged a complaint with the country's Supreme Court.
Regional leaders have threatened to intervene with military force if Yahya Jammeh does not step down by a deadline later and a senior Nigerian army source has indicated that it and other West African states were preparing a military force.
As a result, there is a growing political unrest and thousands of UK holidaymakers will have to be flown home from The Gambia.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 18 January 2017.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has warned against "all non-essential travel" to the west African nation because of possible military intervention following presidential elections on 1 December. Thee are apprehensions that the Banjul International Airport could be shut at short notice. Therefore, travel companies are trying to organize flights back home for UK tourists.

Migrant boat capsizes off Libya's coast - 100 feared dead

The Italian coast guards have indicated that a migrant boat capsized about 30 miles off the coast of Libya and, at least 100 migrants are missing and presumed to be dead. Four survivors have been rescued and eight bodies recovered so far, as per officials who are coordinating the rescue effort.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 15 January 2017.
French and Italian naval and merchant vessels apart from a plane and a helicopter were involved in rescue operations but poor conditions were hampering the search. The boat was believed to have carried 110 people as indicated by a spokesman for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
Incidentally, in the previous 24 hours, coast guard and naval ships and privately-owned vessels had saved nearly 750 migrants who attempted to cross the Mediterranean in rickety boats and, at least five people have died in the process.
According to government figures, a record number of 181,000 boat migrants, mostly from Africa, have reached Italy in 2016 and, most of the boats and migrant ships set off from Libya's lawless coasts because people smugglers can operate with impunity.

Defensive anti-aircraft missiles around Moscow in preparation for a war?

Russia has deployed anti-aircraft missile systems around Moscow in order to protect the capital from any form of attack and is interpreted as the latest sign that President Vladimir Putin is preparing for war. It is the S-400 Triumph air defence system and it has been extending air cover for Russian forces in Syria ever since November. The same is now being deployed on home soil.
This missile system is capable of hitting moving airborne targets including planes and incoming missiles and has a range of 400-Km.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 12 January 2017.
It seems the US has sent more than 3,000 troops to Poland in response to NATOs concern that Russia was becoming more aggressive. This has prompted Russia to put the new S-400 Triumph air defense missile system into service. It has gone on combat duty for the air defense of Moscow and the central industrial region of Russia.
US tanks and armored vehicles have started to arrive in Poland as part of the biggest American military reinforcement in Europe for decades. Soldiers will carry out exercises in the Baltics as part of their tour and as part of the Obama administration's response to Russia's intervention in the Ukraine. The tours will last nine months before troops rotate - however, whether they will remain or not will depend on decision of the new President Donald Trump.

Taliban strikes near the Afghan Parliament in Kabul, kills at least 30

A couple of blasts struck near the Afghan Parliament in Kabul and left at least 30 people dead with another 80 wounded. It was a rush-hour attack by the Taliban and it broke a relative lull in violence in the capital.
The bombings happened hours after a Taliban suicide bomber killed seven people in Lashkar Gah, the capital of the volatile southern province of Helmand, as the militants ramp up attacks.
This has been reported in thehindu.com dated 11 January 2017.
It seems a suicide bomber on foot carried out the first explosion, leaving a number of innocent workers killed and wounded. The second one was a car bomb in a vehicle that was parked on the other side of the road.
The blasts left 30 people dead and 80 wounded - some of the wounded are in serious condition and the death toll was expected to rise. The dead included at least four policemen - they were killed in the second explosion when they rushed to help the victims of the first blast.
This attack underscores the growing insecurity in Afghanistan, where there are around 10,000 U.S. troops who are helping the Afghan forces to combat a resilient Taliban insurgency as well as al-Qaeda and Islamic State militants.

Car bomb kills at least 43 in the town of Azaz in Syria - most of the dead are civilians

A car bomb has killed at least 43 people, most of them civilians, in the rebel-held Syrian town of Azaz on the border with Turkey. Dozens more are wounded in the attack that happened in front of an Islamic courthouse near a market, s indicated by the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Azaz is a major stronghold of the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA).
No agency has claimed responsibility for the latest attack.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 7 January 2017.
The toll was likely to rise in the attack. This was the latest in a string of bombings to hit Azaz that have previously been blamed on ISIS. As SOHR chief has added - identification of the dead was hampered by the fact that some of the bodies were completely burned in the blast.
Till now more than 310,000 people have been killed in Syria ever since the conflict began with anti-government protests in March 2011.

A US army veteran who said the government was controlling his mind has shot dead five people in a baggage claim area at Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida. Apart from the five dead, eight others were injured in the attack.
The 26-year-old killer has been identified and arrested - he had served in Iraq with the National Guard before being demoted and discharged last year for poor performance.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 7 January 2017.
The killer has been taken into custody and is being questioned by the FBI and detectives. They are looking at the terrorism angle also. It seems he had a history of mental health problems and was getting psychological treatment. He arrived at Fort Lauderdale just before 1pm local time on a flight from Minnesota. He was dressed in a Star Wars T-shirt, and he took out a 9mm semi-automatic handgun from his checked luggage and began to fire at people.
Incidentally, as per TSA rules, flying with guns is legal in the US so long as they are kept in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only. Ammunition is not allowed in cabin baggage but is allowed in checked baggage.

Prison riots in Brazil leave at least 60 dead - some were beheaded

Riots in Brazil prisons is not new and, in the latest such atrocity, at least 60 inmates have been killed in the course of a prison riot in the northern state of Amazonas - several of them were beheaded or dismembered.
In addition to the deaths, some of the inmates escaped in the confusion and how many escaped has not been disclosed by the authorities - in addition, some of the prison guards were held hostage.
This has been described as the biggest prison massacre in the history of the state - it began Sunday afternoon and lasted until Monday morning.
This has been reported in nzherald.co.nz dated 3 January 2017.
It seems two of the biggest crime gangs of Brazil had begun fighting last year over control of several prisons and, in the opinion of the authorities in Amazonas, this is the reason behind the first riot of 2017. The inmates had made some demands to end the riot - this is believed to be a hint that the killing spree was organised by members of a local gang against those of another that is based in Sao Paulo.
Incidentally, in another prison in Amazonas, 87 inmates escaped in the early hours of Monday.
