Residents of Lviv, the cultural capital of Ukraine, trying to safeguard historic monuments
Lviv has several historic monuments and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia poses dangers for their safety. Locals have wrapped many stone statues in protective sheets. At the Market Square, men are covering the sculptures of the Roman god Neptune and Greek goddess Amphitrite in plastic. Some of the classical deities Adonis and Diana made of limestone figures are 200 years old. These could suffer irreparable damages because of the ongoing war. Conflicts of this nature destroys the history of centuries. It is difficult to predict their fate. Explosion of bombs or artillery fire or missile attacks could reduce these historical pieces to rubble.
Kyiv and other major cities in Ukraine faced aerial bombardment. As a result, people are fleeing to Lviv. They feel it is safer. The Russian invasion is into its second week and the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine has confirmed destruction of a number of paintings by celebrated folk artist Maria Prymachenko. This happened in a museum in Ivankiv after an attack by the Russians
