Unidentified gunmen stormed Hayat Hotel in Mogadishu and killed at least 20

Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, witnessed an attack by unidentified gunmen. They stormed Hayat Hotel and killed at least 20 persons. A doctor at a hospital revealed that the death toll could rise because many of the victims were in critical condition. This is the Madina, which is one of the two major hospitals in Mogadishu. The victims of the hotel attack were hospitalized here and bodies are still arriving at the hospital. An official of the police confirmed to a section of the media that security forces had entered the hotel building and regained control from the gunmen. Mogadishu hotel attack: Death toll rises. Two security officials suffered injuries in the ongoing attack.

Al-Shabaab, the Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group, has claimed responsibility for the attack. It has said in a statement that its fighters had taken over the managed to take over the hotel. They had blasted their way into the building. However, there is no confirmation about this from other more authentic sources. A recent air strike by the United States did eliminate several members of the Al-Shabaab group. The US Africa Command had confirmed this earlier. It is not clear whether this has any link to the attack on the Hyat Hotel. Recently, in May, US President Joe Biden took a decision to redeploy US troops to Somalia in order to extend support to the local government and to counter threats of al-Shabaab. This was a reversal of decision taken by former President Donald Trump regarding withdrawal of all US troops from the country.

Intelligence experts have warned that terrorists could launch 'drone attacks' on major sporting events in Europe and the US. This has been indicated by analysts at the Open Briefing think tank - terrorists could use a swarm of drones, which are cheap and accessible, to attack crowds of people at an event like the Superbowl.

In the opinion of exerts, attacks of this nature could be launched by sleeper cells or lone wolves who have been brainwashed by ISIS or al-Qaeda terrorists because ISIS are already making use of drones in Iraq and Syria for intelligence gathering. In fact, they are in direct competition now with al-Qaeda and are desperate to launch a mass casualty attack on Western targets.
Moreover, the ISIS propaganda machine could use the drones, fitted with cameras, to film the attacks taking place. Drones are freely available and there was no single counter-measure to prevent such attacks. A major stumbling block is that drones just cannot be shot down in an urban environment or at a packed stadium because of the high risk of collateral damage.
In addition, even a small drone that can carry up to 10-Kg of explosives or a suicide vest, could become a lethal item if directed at a high profile target such as a politician. There have been instances in the past. One option to prevent such situations would be for intelligence agencies to pick up the movement of suspicious individuals as they bought the drones.

The US would be sendig 200 special operation troops to help out the Iraqi and Kurdish forces battling ISIS with instructions to capture or kill senior leaders of the terror network in Iraq and Syria.

These troops would be sent to Iraq within the next few weeks as a part of a "specialized expeditionary targeting force" as announced by Defense Secretary Ash Carter in testimony before the House Armed Services Committee.
The official has informed that the force's remit would include targeted assassinations of senior ISIS if their specific mission requires. A second U.S. official has added that capturing senior ISIS leaders would also be an important component of the new assault force’s mission. That would help them to learn more about the group's structure and any affiliates.
This intel gathering mission is believed to be just as important as compared to eliminating the bad ones and, the number of troops "could grow" beyond 200.
Such operations are not new to the US - the U.S. military had carried out similar operations in Iraq to take out senior Al Qaeda leadership like the mission which killed Al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in June 2006.

Terror attacks in Paris makes the US issue global alert for its citizens

In view if the recent terror attacks in Paris and elsewhere, the US has issued a worldwide travel alert for its citizens. The instructions suggest that due to "increased terrorist threats" and with the current information suggesting that ISIL (another name for Islamic State), al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions, warnings have been issued for US citizens.

Citing recent attacks in Denmark, France, Mali, Nigeria and Turkey, the instructions are to ensure safety because these attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics, using conventional and non-conventional weapons and targeting both official and private interests. Americans have also been advised to avoid large crowds or crowded places and to "exercise particular caution during the holiday season".
The travel alert will be in place until 24 February and is consequent to simultaneous attacks at several locations in Paris that killed 130 people, and a hotel siege in which 19 people died in Mali.
Extremists have targeted large sporting events, theaters, open markets and aviation services and, the State Department cautions that there is a likelihood of terror attacks continuing as members of ISIL/Daesh return from Syria and Iraq. The US regularly issues individual country travel alerts, but worldwide alerts are rare. Obviously, Americans must be extra careful.

The al-Nusra Front, the Sunni Islamic jihadist militia fighting against Syrian Government forces in the civil war, have confirmed the death of its leader Sheikh Abu Sulaiman Al Masri. Images of his body, showing a bloody head wound, have been shared online. He is believed to have been killed in the Syrian capital of Aleppo and, the cause of the death is yet to be confirmed.

The news of the death of the al-Nusra Front leader comes even as Syrian troops backed by Russian air strikes continue to wage a war against Islamic State group fighters in a bid to restore a key supply line to the capital. At least 28 IS fighters and 21 troops and militia have been killed in the battle for the road that leads to the government-held sector of the city – this has been indicated by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Al-Nusra is The Front for the Defence of the Syrian People and it is considered to be the second most powerful jihadist group in Syria after the Islamic State. Therefore, the death of its leader would come as a devastating blow to its operations in the war torn Middle Eastern country.
It may be recalled that it had first announced its existence four years ago. It was behind many of the suicide bombings that rocked Syria when civil war broke out in March 2011.

It is a fact that Russia has carried out airstrikes in Syria – but, instead of targeting the ISIS, the Russia targets appear to have areas that are held by rebels who are receiving arms, funding, and training from the CIA. Dozens of civilians have died in the Russian airstrikes.
The Syrian National Council is a group opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and they have revealed that at least 36 people had been killed by airstrikes in the western city of Homs – five of them were children.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has reiterated that the Russian Air Forces are cooperating with the Syrian pro-government military to target "exclusively" Islamic State (ISIS) targets.
To this, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has indicated that Washington was prepared to welcome Russian military action in Syria as long as it is directed against ISIS and other Al Qaeda affiliates. However, if strikes were conducted against other groups, the matter would be grave.

Masked police officers in plain clothes took into custody a man who was suspected to be plotting a domestic Al Qaeda-inspired terror strike. The arrest happened at medical supplies distributor Alliance Healthcare in Letchworth, Hertfordshire. The man is believed to have worked there as a driver.

The Boko Haram has released its first gruesome video of a beheading. The video follows many of the same style-points as the hundreds of barbaric videos that had been released by ISIS over the last year.

Italy has undertaken a massive anti-terrorism operation to arrest members of an armed terror group inspired by al-Qaeda. The group claims it was ready to carry out attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Iraq trying to confirm if al-Baghdadi has been killed in air strike

The whole world wants to see the last of ISIL chief Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi and, with rumors floating around that he has been killed in airstrikes by coalition warplanes, Iraq was investigating the matter. The coalition warplanes had been targeting the group’s leaders.
In case the rumors turn out to be true, it would be a major victory for the US-led coalition of countries who are relentlessly carrying out airstrikes against ISIL and providing assistance to Iraqi forces who are fighting to regain large areas of Iraq that the militants have overrun.
Already President Barack Obama has unveiled plans to send up to 1,500 more US troops to Iraq to advise and train the country’s forces, deepening Washington’s commitment to the open-ended war against ISIL. As President Obama has said, it was time to go on the offensive against the militants after blunting their advance.
Regarding rumors about al-Baghdadi, a senior Iraqi intelligence official said there was no “accurate information” on whether he was killed but that authorities were investigating.
US Central Command, which oversees American forces in the Middle East, on Saturday said that coalition aircraft had carried out a “series of airstrikes” against “a gathering of [ISIL] leaders near Mosul” but there was no confirmation on whether [ISIL] leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi was among those present.
General Nicholas Houghton, the chief of staff of the British armed forces, has said that it will take some days to have absolute confirmation. On whether the ISIL leader has been killed.
Incidentally, Washington has offered a $10 million reward for his capture.
It may be noted that of the five main Al Qaeda offshoots in Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, the Sahel and Yemen, none has recognized the authority of Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi - at the end of June he had proclaimed the establishment of a caliphate straddling Iraq and Syria, and had also proclaimed himself as “leader for Muslims everywhere”.

A new terror group known as Khorosan was planning to use toothpaste bomb to blow up an airliner and the US airstrikes on ISIS positions in Raqqa have destroyed their plans dailymail.co.uk. It seems the United States bombed a Syrian terror group that was in the final stages of a plot to blow up American airliners with toothpaste tube bombs.

Khorasan is believed to be a group of seasoned al-Qaeda veterans – they intercept Westerners travelling to fight for radical groups in Syria, including ISIS. And, since many of these would-be jihadists retain their passports and travelled to Syria without their home nation's knowledge, Khorasan picks them up and imparts training to them not for combat in the Middle East but rather for future terror attacks back home in the West.

Americans appear to be in plenty of trouble all over the globe and the latest is one of terror threats in Uganda from al-Shabaab militants news.sky.com.
This has been intimated by the US embassy in Uganda to all its citizens to take shelter as Ugandan authorities act against a suspected terrorist cell. As per the warning of the embassy, militants of al Shabaab in the country planned to carry out an "imminent attack". Therefore, all US citizens were advised to either remain indoors or proceed to a safe location.
Ugandan authorities are conducting operations against a suspected terrorist cell in Kampala and, while it is not known about specific targets, the Ugandan authorities have increased security at key sites, including Entebbe International Airport.
The embassy had cautioned in the past that Uganda faces a "continued threat" from terrorists. Incidentally, al-Shabaab is aligned with al-Qaeda and had claimed responsibility for the attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi in neighboring Kenya a year ago. The group also carried out a bombing at a sports bar in Uganda as people were watching the 2010 World Cup on television.

US military carries out operation against al-Shabaab militants in Somalia

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby has confirmed that US military operation was carried out against al-Shabaab Islamic militants in Somalia but provided very little details about the nature of the operation. As he has remarked – the results of the operation were being assessed and additional information would be provided as and when appropriate. The U.S. action comes after Somalia's government forces regained control of a high security prison in the capital that had been attacked by a group of seven heavily armed suspected Islamic militants who attempted to free other extremists held there. Of course, the Pentagon did not indicate whether the U.S. action had any relation to the prison attack. As per Somali officials, all the attackers, three government soldiers and two civilians were killed. Incidentally, the Godka Jilacow prison in Mogadishu is an interrogation center for Somalia's intelligence agency, and suspected militants are believed to be held in underground cells in the prison. The Somali rebel group al-Shabaab is linked to al-Qaeda and claimed responsibility for the attack that shattered a period of calm in Mogadishu after two decades of chaotic violence. As per the sequence of events, a suicide car bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at the gate of the prison, followed by gunmen who fought their way into the prison. It may be recalled that al-Shabaab gunmen had attacked the upscale Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, with guns and grenades last September - 67 people died in the attack.
