48 killed and 79 injured in suicide attack in all-boys school in Nigeria

48 students were killed and 79 injured in a suicide attack on an all-boys school in Yobe district of north Nigeria – the school followed a western curriculum and the local police suspect that Boko Haram is behind this terror attack. The death toll could rise.
The suicide bomber was dressed in school uniform and detonated the bomb during morning assembly. He had gained entry through the schoolyard in Potiskum, Yobe state, before carrying out the attack among the students.
The students of the Government Comprehensive Senior Science Secondary School in Potiskum were waiting to hear the principal's daily address when the suicide bomber struck just before 8am. The attack happened a day after the release of a new Boko Haram video in which the group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, had once again rejected the claims of the Nigerian government about a ceasefire and peace talks.
The most high profile attack by Boko Haram on a school was in April, when fighters kidnapped 276 teenage girls from the town of Chibok in Borno state, also in northeast Nigeria. Even now, over six months later, 219 of the girls are still being held prisoners.

Suicide bomber kills 47 school children in the city of Homs

A suicide bomber had killed 47 children in a school in the city of Homs in Syria giving rise to protests – the children were under the age of 12 news.sky.com. As a part of the protests, hundreds took to the streets calling for the city's governor Talal al Barazi to resign.
The Governor is accused of playing down the atrocity after saying 30 pupils were killed. Actually, the death toll was 54 as revealed by the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
It seems the protest began as a mass funeral for the children, but gradually morphed into a demonstration as residents vented their rage over the attack on the school which lies in the Akrameh neighborhood of the government-controlled city- Its residents are mainly Alawite, like President Bashar al Assad.
SANA, the state news agency of Syria has described the school bombing as "a horrible human tragedy" and anti-Assad activists have also condemned the attack. However, no agency has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Three killed as Taliban suicide bomber targets NATO convoy near US Embassy in Kabul

A suicide bomber belonging to the Taliban rammed an explosives-laden car into a convoy of NATO near the US embassy in Kabul – three people of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed namely, two US and one Polish soldier and at least 13 civilians were wounded theguardian.com.
Moreover, 17 civilian cars were damaged in the explosion which was timed to coincide with the morning rush hour traffic outside the Supreme Court and on a main road leading from the airport to the heavily fortified embassy.
The blast happened on a route that is used on a daily basis by NATO convoys and its effect was felt even at a long distance.
Incidentally, Kabul has been regularly hit by complex Taliban attacks on the airport, luxury hotels, restaurants and foreign compounds. In August, four civilians were killed in a similar attack on a NATO convoy in the city. There were no casualties but it wounded at least 35 bystanders.
As per ISAF, one coalition soldier was shot dead on Monday by a man wearing an Afghan national army uniform and such ‘insider attacks’ have undermined relations between foreign soldiers and the Afghan military. The Afghan military is being trained to take on the Taliban alone after the departure of NATO.

Nigerian forces kill leader of Boko Haram along with 200 soldiers

It was a major victory for Nigerian forces when they succeeded in killing a dreaded commander of Islamist extremist group Boko Haram along with 200 other militants of the group theguardian.com.
As indicated by a Nigerian army officer, the feared commander known only as Amir was among the dead after a battle on Friday in Konduga town located some 35-Km from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state and birthplace of the extremist group.
A Boko Haram video journalist and a suicide bomber were also killed but there were no military casualties, according to the officer and a civilian self-defense group that fights alongside the soldiers.
Boko Haram had captured a string of towns in recent weeks stretching over 320-Km alongside Nigeria’s north-east border with Cameroon in a new campaign to create an Islamic caliphate – it was trying to mimic the ISIS group in Syria and Iraq. Moreover, the Boko Haram extremists have also attacked a town and villages across the border in Cameroon, but the Cameroonian troops beat them off and forced them back across the border into Nigeria.

Syrian rebel leader killed in suicide bomb attack in Ram Hamdan

Suicide bombing has killed Hassan Aboud of Ahrar al-Sham, the leader of an ultraconservative Syrian rebel group, in the northwestern town of Ram Hamdan in the Syrian province of Idlib foxnews.com.
He was believed to be the head of one of Syria's largest rebel groups – many more of his leading fighters were also killed in the attack. This attack is likely to aggravate the present situation and further weaken the country's already shaky armed opposition.
This has been reported by an activist collective called the Edlib News Network and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. The Observatory usually bases its information from a network of activists on the ground.
Both the groups have revealed that other leading group members of the Ahrar al-Sham were killed after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives belt in a meeting.
As per the Edlib News Network, a total of over 40 people were killed, including four other leaders of Ahrar al-Sham. However, the Observatory said "tens" people were killed but did not provide a specific number and such differing casualty figures are quite common immediately after any attack in Syria.
The Ahrar al-Sham had earlier fought against the extremist Islamic State group, which now holds a swath of territory across Syria and Iraq and had blamed the Islamic State group for the killing of Abu Khaled al-Souri, one of their leaders in February.
Incidentally, while Ahrar al-Sham advocates the implementation of an ultraconservative interpretation of Islam, it had worked with more moderate rebel groups trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad. Moreover, it had become the most prominent member of a broader rebel coalition known as the Islamic Front but it is facing loss of donor funding.
