It seems one Islamic extremist rammed a vehicle loaded with explosives into the gate of the Central Hotel, while another extremist went in and blew himself up as per a statement from the office of Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke.
There was a meeting of Government officials going on in the Central Hotel at the time, and the deputy Mayor of Mogadishu and two legislators died in the attack. However, it is not clarified as to whether the number of casualties include the two terrorist bombers. Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabaab militants have accepted the responsibility for the attack.
This is the second attack on a hotel in Mogadishu in less than a month. In the previous instance, on Jan. 22, three Somali nationals were killed when a suicide car bomber blew himself up at the gate of a hotel that was housing the advance party of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He had later visited Somalia.
Incidentally, in spite of losing key strongholds in Somalia, al-Shabaab continues to stage attacks in the capital and elsewhere.
