As per UN warning, a northeast Iraq town under siege by Islamic State militants since June is now faced with the prospect of a massacre unless there is an urgent action taken to rescue residents.
The affected belong to the Shia Turkmen community of Amerli situated some 110 miles north of Baghdad – the situation can be compared with the siege by Islamic State on Mount Sinjar, where thousands of Yazidi were trapped for weeks before U.S. air strikes drove the militants away and allowed the innocent civilians to escape the bloodthirsty jihadists.
However, the situation in Amerli is of Shia Muslims, who are trapped and reviled by the mostly Sunni Islamic State fighters.
The U.N. has urged the allies of Iraq and the international community to work with the authorities in order to prevent a human rights tragedy.
On a rough estimate, 20000 people in Amerli are fighting off death, the children there are only eating once every three days.
Prime minister designate Haidar al-Abadi has promised aid for the town and has called for provision of military and logistical support for Amerli.
The people have been fending off the militants for 70 days and now do not have enough drinking water or electricity. Moreover, while there was a recent U.S. intervention to save members of the Yazidi religious trapped who were trapped on Mount Sinjar in northwestern Iraq, there appears to be no plan anywhere to conduct a rescue operation for these unfortunate Shias.
